Afternoon!

So tomorrow after work I have to leave Kent to drive to Shrewsbury at the dreaded time of 5pm. The idea of the M1 is worrying due to having nightmare's on it before. Thinking about carrying on round the M25 to use the M40 or maybe starting on the M1 and then cutting across. Any advice welcome!!

M25 M40 M42 M5 M6 M54

Only slight option is to come off the M5 at j4 Stourbridge and take A roads to Shrew

Good luck!

^^^^ this.
As long as there is nothing on the radio of course about a pile up on the m40.
I'd go round the bottom side of the 25 too the m40 then carry on as mentioned, as the m1 north on a friday eve/night can be a right p.i.t.a

How about M25, M11,A14, M6, M54. Only problem areas might be M25/M11 & A14. By the time you hit M6, it should have quietened down . Depends on the heavies on the A14 whether or not you get held up with elephant racing.I've used both A14 etc and M1 down to Chatham down to Chatham area and prefer the A14 route.

Great thanks - much appreciated. I had to do Dorset last week and a journey that can do in 2 hours at night took 5 bloody hours. Hats of to you guys that hit these roads on a daily basis - although it mead me realise how unfit I was changing bloody gear on the M25 car park!

Other option would be M25 to M4 J15 (Swindon), then A419 A417 (mostly DC) to M5, then as before.

OP doesn't say where in Kent he is departing from at 5pm, but the above route will take him through the Dartford Tunnel. It will be a PITA until after 7pm on a weekday. Once clear of that bottleneck it's not too bad. The southern route will be a PITA between the M3 and the M40, especially near Heathrow.

1. Nice leisurely meal, walk in the park (borrow a friend's border collie for extra relaxation), relax and enjoy.
2. Depart 8pm.
3. Arrive Shrewsbury 11 pm, 10 minutes later and a whole lot happier than if you had set off at 5pm.

Thank you to you all for the advice. Going to try going round the bottom end of the M25 as long as nothing on the updates to the contrary and then pick up the M40 M42 M5 M6 M54 with Stourbridge as an option.

And QBee I will have our Springer Spanner in the back so all else fails we’ll pull off and have a walk!

A14 has roadworks, Cathorpe interchange has roadworks, I'd avoid that. M40 for the best bet. Just be careful at the southern end, i've seen a speed camera van a couple of times on a friday evening (just about saw it in time it appears) on the plus side you can stop at the services for a pint!

If the M40 is sticky...

M25 M3 Bracknell M4 A417 M5 M5J5 A449 Kidderminster Bridgnorth Shrewsbury.

I spent a year doing Gatwick-Worcester and always went through Bracknell.
