Malpensa Airport to Andermatt
Discussion
Next month I am doing a hire car blast covering some of the areas I did on road trips in 2009/2010 and was wondering if someone could recomend a route from Malpensa Airport near Milan, to Andermatt in Switzerland?
This is what google says, avoiding the motorway in Switzerland..

Cheers

If you're not in a rush, then my choice (based on a single week-long motorbike trip in the area) would be:
Malpensa to Laveno (on L.Maggiore).
Ferry to Intra
Up the coast to Cannobio
SS631 to Santa Maria and SS337 on to Masera
Go over the Simplon Pass
Turn Right at the bottom
Then you can chose the Nufenen and San Gottardo passes (re-joins your route), or Furka pass (might be shorter).
The next day, do Furka / Grimsel / Susten pass loop.
Best motorbiking I've ever done, sure it'll be ace in a decent car too.
Don't forget to post pics!

Shall see how things are looking when I get there and make a choice! Just got to pray to the weather gods as from what I have seen there has been load of heavy rain recently! Oh and that I dont end up with a 1.2 Punto hire car again, that was not the fastest car in the world!

Hi, I just did the most westerly route through Brig a couple of days ago and was clear of traffic and great scenery too. Coming down through Airolo the week before the queues heading north (albeit on the motorway) looked awful. Yes round the lake is slow going. Cheers.
As does that!https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Malpensa+Airp...

The Oberalppass is part of the plan, at the moment my holidays plan looks something like this with the roads...

Sunday
Drive from Devon to Donington for the Britsh GT meeting, before staying the night in Luton ahead of the flight to Malpensa early the next morning.
Monday
Choose from one of the routes mentioned earlier, getting to Andermatt via the old St Gotthard Pass. Then an evening run over the Sustenpass, which is one of my favourite roads.
Tuesday
The Andermatt loop, going the opposite way to what we did in 2010. before chilling out for the rest of the day/evening.

Wednesday
Head to Davos via this route..

Thursday
Over the Fluela Pass, before cruising back to the airport, for a mid afternoon flight home.

Got home late last night from a pretty amazing few days driving in Italy and Switzerland! You truly do live in a staggeringly beautiful part of the world, and the drives over the Fluela and Julier passes are something I will never forget!
Now to start sorting through the hundreds of pictures, and hours of video I took.

Hope you have a great time, im sure you will be following in the wheel tracks of many legends on those roads!
As for my trip it started at a very grey and humid, Malpensa Airport, where after a very long wait and "discussion" with the hire car company, I was given a Peugeot 208 TD...lovely! Still it was better than the Xsara Picaso and Fiat 500L things they tried to give me!

The drive to Andermatt didnt't start too well, with the Italian lakes smothered in cloud, and the Simplon Pass full of Lorries and road works Things improved when I got to the Nufenen Pass, which while cloudy at the top, was almost deserted!

I was staying at Hotel Badus in Andermatt, which was a very nice place with views of the mountains, railway and farm animals, very Swiss. It cost around £55 a night, the food was good and the staff very patient with my pathetic efforts with the language!
Tuesdays drive on the Susten, Grimsel, Furka, Nufenen and Gotthard passes was bloody epic, with traffic being surprisingly light and the weather mostly stunning!

I also had time to have a look at the Rhone Glacier, and towards the end of the day go on a walk on one of the well marked walks near Realp.

Wednesday was a very mixed day, which started off with a brilliant drive on an empty Oberalp Pass, before the weather turned bad on the Lukmanier Pass and was even worse as I climbed the San Bernardino Pass. Such a shame as it was one of the roads I was most looking forward to doing! Splugen Pass was also very foggy at the top

But once I got to Chiavenna, and took a slow drive up the twisty Maloja Pass the weather improved, and was absolutely stunning!

And the day got better as I took the Julier Pass, which was one of my best drives in a long time, with stunning views and a recently resuraced, twisty north descent. Picture is the south side, I was too busy enjoying the north to stop!

Eventually after some other amazing bits of road, and more great views, I ended up at Hotel Dischma in Davos, which for £52 a night was another bargain!
The next morning I was up early and headed out to Fluela Pass, which with the Susten Pass has to be one of the best roads in the world IMO. Flowing corners, and hazy morning sun light made a stunning drive, even in a diesel 208!

So after finishing the pictures and videoing (Still uploading those!) I set the satnav for the Airport to find I had misjudged the timing and it was going to be tight! The drive down was spirited, but safe and I made it in time...only for the flight to be delayed! Brilliant!
