At 10PM tonight we will be heading to Lossiemouth for the week, the route takes us through the obvious places- Ben Nevis and Loch Ness. Can someone recommend any other good places along the way please? We may loop around to SKYE on the way home.

You went the wrong way. Black Forest is better and closer (to you). Hotels are the same if not cheaper.

This - unmissable and the best road I've driven in the UK by a long way.

Bit late now, but if you're coming straight back, don't bother with the A9 or A90, head for Nairn & follow the A939 until you hit either the B976 or A93, then follow the A93 towards Perth. I believe the A940 from Forres down to the A939 is meant to be OK, but never driven it myself. Be aware that the daytime temp over the upper reaches of this road is already down near freezing, so treat it as a winter drive.

Got home last night, went to Applecross thanks to the advice on here and we loved it. Thank you for that, it was a highlight of our holiday. The Isle of Skye is enchanting, sadly we only had a few hours there, but will be heading back next year.

As for the Black Forest, it is lovely, but does not even come close to the Highlands.

Pics to follow...

Really? Here are just a few examples of roads I was on in the Black Forest.

And while you're their, it's only 1hour and 22minutes by motorway to this in Switzerland.

Or for the similar mileage from Kent you can go to Scotland, a land of beauty and wonderful people where you have roads like this.

Not really in the same league is it?

Black Forest is lovely, but it is not in the same league as The Highlands.

Now I'm confused, we went to Scotland...

Do I need one of those parrot things?

Well if its a choice of a load of hairpins in a forest or this,I know which I prefer, but I'm probably a little biased as these are on my doorstep.

Gradually getting through my photos, I love this one. A spot I would not have seen if it wasn't for the kind folk on here, thanks again.

+1

Food is better, beer better, weather better (they get real full fat 30C
sunshine there) and they arguably speak better English too.

What's not to like ?

Add in the fact that some serious driving roads are only an
hour south in wonderful Austria.

Ha.

Couple from last week when we had temp inversion. Apols if you saw one of these on another thread.

By the way food was utterly fking dreadful when I moved here, I can understand why the Highlands has a poor reputation... however it's now as good as anywhere in the UK. The local hotel just voted 13th best in the world by The Times. Massive changes in less than a decade.

Lovely photos, apologies not needed- they are re post worthy.

We stayed in Lossiemouth for 3 days, we were there taking photos of the Joint Warrior exercise. We had food in the Clifton and I have to say, hats off to them as their food is fantastic.

ETA we did stop at one pub for dinner one evening and all looked promising from the outside, you know the type- old world charm, log fires etc. It was downhill from there once we entered the bar and the final nail in the coffin was the menu being on a clip board. We didn't bother with the food!
