Edinburgh to Hampshire

All going well then I'm picking up an MX5 Mk1 in Edinburgh next week and driving it home to Hampshire.
I would like to do some of the mileage off the motorway, so was thinking of taking the A68 out of Edinburgh down to Jedburgh then across on the A7 to join the M6 at Carlisle.
Worth doing? Any other suggestions?

A7 to Galashiels to Selkirk and then the A708 to Moffat and onto the M74, or

A701, bypass Penicuik using the B7026 - turn off just before Milton Bridge, road sign for Auchendinny. It continues as the A6094. At Leadburn crossover to continue on the A701 to Blyth Bridge. Turn left for the A72 towards Selkirk, note this becomes the A707 at some point. And then the A708 to Moffat as above, or

The A7 all the way. The A68 between Edinburgh and Jedburgh would be last on my list, or

just ditch the maps and get lost, really can't go wrong.

or just after jedburgh take a b road (6357) and past north side of kielder, head south to brampton then onto a69 to haltwhistle, to alston, then to middleton in teesdale, to brough, to hawes, to settle, to skipton then m65 via moor road (west road/skipton old road) then onto m6

by which time it will be dark, so you wont see just how st it can be in the north as you pass through burnley/colne and nelson

Keep to the A7 or run down the Moffat road Selkirk A708 to the M74.

Manchester M6 M61 M60 Stockport to Chestefield on various A roads then M1 south....

Why bother to turn off the A701? Stay on it all the way to Moffat.
If the road is clear try descending the Devil's Beef Tub without ever touching the middle pedal.

If going via Haltwhistle why bother going all the way to Brampton? B6357/B6318 to Gilsland and Greenhead then B630 and A69. Conversely, if going via Brampton why go all the way to Haltwhistle before heading for Alston? B6357 to Canonbie, B7201/A7 to Longtown then A6071 to Brampton. From there A689 via Hallbankgate and Slaggyford.

You make a fair point, turn off the A701 at Blyth Bridge and you miss out on a very good drive, on which you can make rapid progress with little traffic. Very visible sweeping bends. The A708 is narrower and not so visible and although even less traffic than the A701 (you have the road to yourself), driving speeds will be lower, but personally I rate the A708 above the A701.
