Good luck around the Posthouse A55/A483 Chester roundabout. Roadworks there are now delayed until May. I go that way from Wrexham to Chester every day to work.

Did a similar route on Thursday, but starting from near Ffesteniog and it was the most incredible day of driving I have ever had! The roads were incredibly quiet, and great fun to drive. Enjoy!

I've been looking at this route for my upcoming Wales trip. Has anyone driven these roads recently? Is it a good route for driving roads?

Yes but don't stay in that holiday Inn, much nicer somewhere down the coast, Ruthin Castle is an interesting place to stay and a lovely setting.

What did Google Maps give as a total distance / time for that, it looks like a great route.

I don’t want to criticise too much because I think it’s good that you have put a route up but you’ve focussed too much on the obvious routes and have too many A roads. You’ve missed most of the best roads and I could definitely help improve.
First off Ruithin to EVO though the Forest is much better, keep away from the A5
Secondly Beddgellert down to nanmawr, Gareg, rhyd
Thirdly do B4391...commonly considered the best road in Wales
Fourthly Bala to Llangynog is epic.
Lastly do these roads early on Sunday
You won’t see another vehicle and you’ll have a great time.
Like all National Parks the roads are epic the scenery is stunning and if you don’t go early enough your drive is just a frustrating time stuck behind people staring at the scenery

Indeed. Having done the first half why omit the second? smile
From Llangynog would you double back or continue then take the B4396 after Penybontfawr?

Heading home from Rally Gb, I drove Bala to Llangynog on Sunday, and it really was stunning! Just had to mind a few crazy sheep! But then that's the norm up there!

The A5 isn't the ideal road but it's a sight better than the A55. I'm going to Llandudno on Wednesday, so I have 2 general routes I can take after Stoke-on-Trent - either I continue to Chester and take said A55, or I aim west and end up on the A5 at Llangollen.

Obviously I don't fancy getting stuck on route, as there will be an 8 year old in the rear seat and he's recently received a stopwatch so I expect frequent reminders of exactly how long the journey is taking.

So my question is, if the conditions are inclement, like a week ago, is the A5/A470 kept flowing, or will some pillock park in a hedge and cause hours of blockages? If I can tell what the weather is in Betws-y-Coed by the time I get to Stoke, I can decide on the route, but if I'm going to get through the A5 route regardless of weather I will take it, because the A55 looks dull.

And if the conditions are good, I might take some of the interesting parallel roads! Shame it'll be dark by the time I get to Wales...

You will be fine as the A5 it is kept clear through most weather conditions. The big advantage round these parts is the traffic is light so the gritters keep moving and the roads are kept good. We had 10 inches of snow last week and all main routes north of Shrewsbury were moving ok. The roads round Telford were at standstill whilst here in Oswestry they were ok. Any how it is irrelevant as it is not going to snow. And the traffic is very light this time of year.
