Can someone help me decide on the route to take for a leg of a trip I'm planning next month, ideally from someone that has driven one of the two routes (or both!).

We are travelling down the Route Napoleon from Digne to Castellane, but then I am unsure whether to head up and along the N202 which looks like a pretty good route, or to head along to Col du Vence which I've seen a few times in videos and recommended elsewhere.

We did that route early April and followed the advice of a petrol station owner in Barreme which was to take the N202. She said the N85 had a lot of commercial traffic on it so was slow and that when you hit the coast, we would have to take the autoroute or be faced with even heavier traffic. We found the N202 very good and it dropped us right into Nice which was our destination.

The N202 ends at the bridge over the Var. From the junction there it becomes the D4202/D6202 (Route des Alpes) and follows the river all the way. If you like ravines then use this route. If you prefer something a little more challenging with somethen take the D2211 then D2 via Gréolières to Vance.

It will have less traffic and your only issue may be cyclists as James Bond encountered in Goldeneye.

It was shot on this spectacular section - A to B - of the D2 just west of Gréolières: the hairpin is at C.
