Hi PH,

I have been trawling through the forums looking for someone who has done a similar route in similar time and included places to stay things to see and it has been helpful. I thought I would post up in case anyone has some definitives for me as I know there are a lot of well travelled users on here.

I am taking an american friend of mine to Europe. He is a huge Porsche fan and I have 6 days to show him some great European roads - he fly's out from Stuttgart on the 20th June and we cross into europe on Eurotunnel on the morning of the 15th June. So I have 5.5 days.

This is what I am thinking:

Monday Day 1 - Calais - Nurburgring
Tuesday Day 2 - Do some laps on the Ring - with a company that hires out suzuki swifts or cars similar to that - does anyone have any reccomendations on track car hire companies or experience of them ?
Wednesday Day 3 - B500 through black forrest

(this is where I am struggling to come up with something to do for 1-2 days - Alps passes seem to far - any other suggestions ??)

Friday Day 5 - Porsche Museum Stuttgart.

Saturday Day 6 - He flies out of Stuttgart back to USA.

I am open to any suggestions / criticisms etc. Any nice lodgings etc or great beer drinking / eating venues would be hugely appreciated.

I know this kind of thing has been posted up before but I am less determined to do long days of driving. I did a trip to monaco and back last year via route napoleon and allowed too little time - it was taxing.

Any input is very much appreciated.

Thanks Guys.

I did it a few years back but did the Ring on the way back. I understand you can't but why head for the Ring so early!
I drove from Calais via minor roads easily within the day to Reims to see the old GP road circuit and stayed very near the centre of Reims in their equivalent of a Premier Inn that night.
The following day I drove the minor roads via Verdun and the sobering but extremely worthwhile battlefield's and war monument to WW1 followed by a night in Metz ...... The centre of which is very nice with some great restaurants.
Then head to the Ring from there?

Hi Wozy - yeah sure I get your point - will look into that. Last time I drove from Calais to Strasbourg and the autoroutes were just a long slog. So there are some interesting roads this side of the ring ....

Anyone done the champagne tasting in epernay ?

Yes, we did the Moët one last year, although they seem to be closed for renovation.

It was very interesting and the cellars are an incredible sight considering that is just one house of many along the same street!

We met another couple who spoke very favourably about the Ruinart tour. It is a bit pricey in comparison but then it is a nicer champagne...

We are heading off on a trip next week for 6 days:

Route is:
Calais
Reims
Vosges mountains
Mulhouse for Schumpf car collection
Black Forest (avoiding most of the B500 as very busy), stick to the L roads
Baden Baden
Nurburgring
Spa
Bastongne war memorial
Etoges (near Epernay)

PM me if you want me to email you the route.

To get to Nurburg take the motorway towards Spa, then
1. Verviers > Jalhay > 676 & 669 > Monschau > 258 Nurburg, or
2. go further south on E42 to Malmedy > Waimes > Butgenbach > 265, 421, 410 & 257 to Nurburg, or
3. go even further south on E42 to Prum then 410 & 257.

Stunning roads which are not often mentioned in this forum. Very quiet mid week, fast & flowing bits with plenty of twisties as well. Perfect proof that you don't need to go all of the way to the Alps for excellent roads. Not that there is anything wrong with the Alps of course... if you have time to get there/back wink

Interesting, that's were I've scheduled in a stop between Baden Baden and the 'ring. Anywhere particularly good to eat or just a picturesque stop off point?

There are loads of places to eat, I've not been to the same place twice and they've all been good. Depending on the day of the week, time and weather it can get busy so I suggest you find a place to park and take a relaxed stroll from there wink

I would say most people who have stayed anywhere nearby! Great atmosphere and loads of memorabilia on the walls and CEILING.

And remember, if you have the raw steak on the hot stone (which you must)...
1. Take the meat off the stone when it arrives and put a small piece on at a time or your rare steak will end up being very well done by the time you finish it, and
2. do NOT, whatever you do, put pepper on the stone - the room will quickly fill with acrid smoke if you do wink

I can recommend rent4ring. The cars are very well set up with sticky rubber, kW suspension, brakes (the brakes are awesome) Recaro seats, and a cageAnd they have some rhd ones. They allow you to properly enjoy the day. Some of the others are just road cars with little prep, though I cannot speak, from experience re rent race car. All I can say is I had a great day in the r4r swifts and I'd hire one again. Steak on the stone is great, but I reckon it will get unbearably hot in the basement room in summer temps.

Don't forget there's more than just the track at the 'Ring if you're stuck another day. You can go to the museum, hike up to the castle and I'm almost certain there's an off reading centre nearby. I might be imagining that though!

Stuttgart Zoo is worth a shout if you like that sort of thing and when you visit the Porsche museum if you walk up the road at the other side you can see them actually building the cars in the factory if it's relatively warm and the doors/windows are open. Seeing them driving the cars about inside is surreal!
