Day 1.

I would be tempted to turn right at Upper Chapel onto the B4519 then head via Llangammarch Wells to Tirabad. Take the the military road to the A40 at Llywel - 8 miles of utterly superb flowing tarmac. At the LLywel end after the cattle grid it becomes a single lane d/c so it's legal to do 70mph (if you dare - the surface is nowhere near as good as over the ranges!). Rejoin your current route at Sennybridge.

Another vote for the B4391 - it's the Daddy.

As said, turn off the A5 at Nescliffe onto the B4396 through Knockin, across the A483 and fork left before Llanrhaedyr Mochnant, joining the B4391 just before Penybontfawr.

There's a car park and bog at Llangynog, which is where the real action starts. Follow into Bala, then A4212 around Llyn Celyn reservoir and then turn right onto the B4391 again, to Ffestiniog.

I found a belter yesterday whilst walking the Tarrenhendre ridge. Take the B4518 NW out of Llanidloes, past Llyn Clywedog reservoir and then left on the mountain road through Aberhosan. It drops down into Machynlleth high street. Absolute corker and barely another car to be seen.

It most certainly is!

Good call. thumbup

From Macynlleth how about this for Day 1?

A489 to Cemmaes Road
A470 to Dinas Mawddwy
Unclassified to Bwlch-y-Groes (Hellfire Pass)
Unclassified to Lake Vyrnwy
B4393 northern loop
B4396 Abertridwr to Penybontfawr
Unclassified to Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant
B4380 to Oswestry

Depending on timing/hotel preference I would consider staying overnight at the Wynnstay Arms in Llanrhaeadr rather than Oswestry.

Updated day 1 as recommended ( I think), it's now an estimated 8 hour drive on Google maps. I'm wondering if that's a bit much for one day, then again it's a one off weekend drive

For day 2 I'd consider taking the Sychnant Pass Rd out of Conwy and driving over the mountain to Dwygyfylchi/Penmaenmawr and getting onto the A55 there. It's fairly windy and interesting and the view you get from the top of the pass looking out to Anglesey on a good day is spectacular - just mind the sheer drop on your right!. If you want to see Conwy itself then you can always do a 'lap' of the town via the one-way system then take the Sychnant Pass anyway.

Also consider going to Beddgelert on the 'out' leg (past Llyn Gwynant on your right) and then coming back on yourself before turning left up to Snowdon/Pen y Pass - not essential but it's a nice climb out of Beddgelert with great views.

Looks like a great day would like to do it when I get a bike next year.

Travelled to N Wales near Betwys-y-Coed today from Croydon. Usual motorways (M25 - M40-M5-M54) to A5 and Shrewsbury and then turned off for Knockin after Shrewsbury and took B4396 and B4391 to Bala and beyond then across moors to Penmachno. Oh, what a wonderful pair of B roads! They were mostly empty at 10am -midday and the driving was sublime. Made the A5 to Oswestry and then Llangollen and Corwen, Cerrig y Drudion, etc. look dire. We'll go back the same way in a week's time.
