Following on from this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I would like to plan a slightly more interesting route from Southampton to North Wales. Google maps suggests the best route from Southampton is A34, M40, M42, M6, M54 then A5.

255 miles and 4h55m.

I reckon there must be a better/more interesting route. Possibly heading into Wales slightly earlier? Any suggestions please?

Up via Salisbury/Bath to the M4. Over the M48 (old bridge) to Chepstow, B4235/4598 to Usk/Abergavenny, then A489/470 to Builth, Newtown and then North to Dolgellau and Betws-y-Coed. Lovely drive.

Severn View Services to Bala: https://goo.gl/maps/qAeDt

All together it might be a bit more than you were looking for, but that just means you should leave earlier or drive faster. wink

I think you meant the A479. The A489 runs from Craven Arms to Caersws and Cemmaes Road to Machynlleth.
Between Caersws and Cemmaes Road its former route has become part of the A470

From Abergavenny to Betws-y-Coed my choice would be
A40/B4601 to Brecon.
B4520/B4519 to Garth
A483 to Beulah
B4358 to Newbridge-on-Wye
A470 to Rhyader
B4518 to Llanidloes and Llanbrynmair
A470 to Dinas Mawddwy
Unclassified via Bwlch-y-Groes to Llanuwchllyn
B4403/B4391 to Bala
A4212/B4391 to Ffestiniog
A470/A5 to Betws-y-Coed

As the previous poster mentioned you'll need a lot more time going the scenic route.
But if interesting is what you want that's the price that has to be paid. smile

It also depends on time of day

Just to throw a few other views in to the mix

Yes M48 (original) Severn Bridge and up the Wye Valley. I would even suggest carrying directly on to Monmouth. Oveer the top or following the river you can get caught behind people so... hit or miss plus you pass the likes of Tintern Abbey.
Over the Wye Bridge in Monmouth.
Follow right at the junction and basicallly heading for Hereford Road where you'll pass the Girl's School and it's bridge.
Stay on that old Hereford road to Much Dewchurch then left to join the A465 (right) toward Hereford.
At that junction is a Shell garage. Useful if you are fond of V-Power and a great place to grab other supplies.
Go north about 4ish miles. JUST before the 40mph in to Hereford go left for Clehonger, Madley and Bredwardine and then on to Hay on Wye.(B4349 becomes B4352 in Clehonger and then B4348 a few miles before HoW)
On B4350 to Glasbury and on to Three Cocks.
Right along A4079 to rounabout 'below' Llyswen and then right in to Llyswen and the road becomes the A470.
Cont. north only about 2.5miles and right over Llanstephan bridge (narrow with weight limit but fun)
Follow that to Erwood Station *ignore fact that Erwood village is on other side of the river on the A470,

B4567 (A481) >>>> Llanwelwedd
Llanelwedd (near Builth) >>>> Newbridge On Wye A470 >>>> Rhayader >>> LLangurig >>>> Llanidloes
In Llani go over Severn/Hafren Bridge near the Texaco garage/small roundaboout and left again for Staylittle,
Passing Llyn Clywedog. After Stayliitle - look out for urn for Dylife/Forge/Machynlleth and don't carry on to Llanbrynmair.
Down in to Mach. and jump back on to the A470 and go north toward Dolgellau.
Of course, you may wish to be nearer Bala in which case at Llanelwedd i would towards Llandrindod Wells - Knighton - Clun - Bishops Castle (A488) - Churchstoke - Welshpool - Llanfyllin -(B4391) - Llangynog - Bala>
From Bala then either the A494 to Corwen or A4212 for short hop before turning right along narrow road to Cerrigydrudion which is a good start point for the Evo Triangle.

Whichever of the routes already laid out here it'll be a fun route... imo smile

Thanks for all the above. Will plan a bit more tonight/tomorrow.

Two things to consider. I'll be in a Volvo XC70 so driving thrills are not really required, just want the route to be pretty and more interesting than 200 miles of Motorway, but on the flip side the journey is already 5hrs. I'm not sure how much longer I can make it for the Mrs without her having a fit.

Don't tell her then. And put a sedative in her tea/coffee. You can wake her up when you judge it appropriate. smile
