I went to Cardiff Bay back in July and followed the below routes that zasker provided. Thanks zasker.

I'm looking to go back this weekend. Arrive Friday night, spend the day out Saturday, with Sunday to relax and drive home to London late afternoon. Rather than stay in Cardiff Bay I'd like to stay near the Brecon Beacons. B&B sounds good to me. Is it wirth driving around this time of year, or will the weather spoil it?

I'll be coming from M25/M4 from Essex. Any other suggestion to add route wise?

I'm thinking of staying here at the Prince Of Wales Inn on the Merthyr Road/A465.

I might end up making the trip on my own if my friends drops out.

Thanks all.

Depends how long you've got. You could head north up the A470 towards Merthyr then take the A465 towards Abergaveeny but take the B4560 towards Llangynidir just after Ebbw Vale. Then get on the A40 towards Brecon or the A479 towards Talgarth (worth visiting The Honey Cafe)then the A438/A470 back to Brecon, A470 back towards Merthyr but then take the A4059 towards Hirwaun and then make your way back to Cardiff. Should take a couple or 3 hours but there are loads of other choices.

No idea about staying down that way but roads to look out for
A4059 ( from Heads of Valley road to A470 nr Storey Arms)

from Brecon - B4520 Lower then Upper Chapel Rd. and hang a left on to B4519 across Epynt and down in to Garth then left to Beulah along A483 (if you overshoot and find yourself in Builth Wells then don't worry tis a nice road down in to BW as well)

At Beulah - choose: north to Newbridge on B4358 or cont on A483 to Llandovery and seek out the B4069 (Top Gear road which features heavily in here but now has below NSL limits imposed.Nice road, all the same, but there are others i prefer like the B4358 to Newbridge)

IF you did go Newbridge I'd suggest heading as if for Llanyre along B4358 (you cross the A470 in Newbridge by travelling along the A470 for about 300-400 yards before turning left).
Go out of Newbridge - at junction for Howey (big sign for Quackers outside which is a beat up Jet Provost). Take that road to Howey via Disserth. Unnumbered but okay)
At Howey turn left and then right (crossing A483) and aim for Hundred House.
(another unnumbered roads but great views and common land)
At Hundred House turn right on to A481 toward Builth but before you get to Llanelwedd turn left on to B4567 going passed Aberedw heading toward Erwood Station.
Immediately after the station on the right turn right for Llanstephan. (Unnumbered road again).
Can't think of how far - maybe 2-3miles - but turn right to cross the Wye using Llanstephan bridge. Narrow but great bridge just gotta watch out for the hazard warning sign for the right turn.
Over the bridge hang a left on to A470 to Llyswen and right in Llyswen staying on 470 >>> Brecon roundabout.
Left initially along A40 toward Abergavenny but first proper left off the dual carriageway for Talybont and/or Llanfihangel Talyllyn but heading for Talybont which'll take you under the dc if you get on the right road.
In Talybont (on Usk) turn right and go by the reservoirs and it'll bring you out just north side of Merthyr Tydfil.
The Brecon Mountain Railway is up there aswell, should you be interested.

Anyway - started out with view of throwing a few roads at you but should be a fun route. Hope your car's not a big meaty one wink

[not proof read yet so apologies if there's some odd typings]

If you have the whole day Sat I would head further north after the brilliant Upper Chapel to Garth B4519 road.

The B4391 from Penybontfawr to Bala road is a great drive and when then head to Ffestiniog via A 4214 then back on the B4391.

Only thing I haven't been that way on a Saturday so not sure how busy them roads will be.

Little Fiesta ST 180 so should be okay on most roads.

I was ill yesterday and ended up vomiting, so cancelled my plans as not feeling too great today. Next chance two weeks time. When I go I'll drive up Friday night, up and out early Saturday around 7am, maybe about 9am if my girlfriend comes with me, she has mentioned she'd like to come. Whole day of driving, stop for photos, walks, food. Then Sunday see how I feel.

I remember one road from last time, it was a single track, twisty bridge with vehicles giving way at the top, any idea what it's called?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It sounds like I've a whole day of exploring there. I'll make sure to fill the tank as I arrive in Wales. I only see one petrol station open near the honey cafe last time I was there.

Thanks for the advice, we had a great time. I planned to go in October but didn't manage it until just now.
