I'm picking up new toy from Narborough in Leicestershire tomorrow and driving it back to Hertford. Can anyone recommend any fun detours I could take en route or even a complete alternative to the M1?

You could use stretches of the A6. Maybe cut across on the A14 to Rushden and follow the B645 across to St Neots. A1 south from then.

https://goo.gl/maps/JekNfcMXNVN2 - if time is an issue, from Kimbolton take the B645 to St Neots, then A1.

A1 is dull through Hertfordshire. Bit of a detour, but leave the A1 at Stevenage, and take the A602 through Watton at Stone and on to the A10. Then A414 back to Hertford.

Ended up having a fantastic drive back.

I got a very loose description of how to find the M1 from the seller and followed any interesting looking B-roads I could find heading in that general direction. That took me for about 10 miles until I found the motorway. I then cruised down the M1 with the roof down in glorious sunshine back to the A507.

My plan was to take the A507 all the way to the A10. There are some nice roundabouts on the first section and some properly twisty bits further east, so I was quite looking forward to that. Imagine my disappointment when I found out it was closed.

I decided to follow the official diversion for the A507, figuring it might cut out the closed bit and deposit me back on the same road further down. It didn't.

I can only assume whoever planned out that diversion was a petrolhead of the very highest order. It went on for about 20 miles, which I can't see any logical justification for at all, but it took in some of the best driving roads on the Herts/Beds border. It really was a first rate hoon, particularly on a quiet Sunday afternoon. I spent most of it in the company of an AMG C63 that was being driven quite spiritedly and even got a wave when we parted company at Barton Le Clay. By that point I was more or less on home soil and just at the start of one of my favourite local B-roads, which took me virtually back to the door.

Totally by accident I ended up having the best drive I've had in ages. Smitten with the car too.
