Hello. My first posting on this forum, so probably asking dumb questions - apologies.

I am driving from London to Austria on the Sat of half term. I prefer the route via Belgium, Netherlands into Germany / Aachen. Normally, I would follow the standard route to Frankfurt and then A3 / A9 to Munich. However, I recall the A3 section between Frankfurt to Munich, is two-lanes and was thinking of avoiding that and going down to Stuttgart on the A5 from Frankfurt and then onto the A8 to Munich instead. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts / experience of that, pls?

Also, I ultimately need to get to Scheffau / Kufstein area and was thinking that if I took to A8 to Munich from Stuttgart, then I could go the ''other'' way around the Munich ring road (anticlockwise) to pick up the A8 to Rossenheim rather than clockwise for 270 degrees. As I say, normally, take the A9 into Munich (from Nuremberg) and hence, go clockwise around the Munich ring road onto the A8 to Rossenheim...but just exploring options.

I am driving overnight...will be in Calais for midnight, so anticipating Frankfurt for 8am-ish, Munich for 10am - 11am-ish on the Sat of half term. Kids and missus in tow, so won't be hacking it.

Many thanks

dcb

It's mostly three lanes. There is some two lanes only between Aschaffenburg
and Wurzburg, but roadworks are in and it's getting smaller all the time.

There are some lovely four lanes each way no limits between Ingolstadt and Munich.
Expect the world and his wife to be going flat out in whatever they have there.

A5 carries a *lot* of traffic and gets busy. Opinions vary, but I tend to prefer
the A3 / A8 solution.

Mind you, the A8 near Munich has been reworked in the last few years
and 150 mph is a doddle in the no limits sections.

Munich outer ring road (their M25) goes from about 9pm near Germering
to about 6pm near Oberhaching. It isn't a complete loop.

You could of course, use the Mittlering. It's like their version of the North Circular
and I find it really stressful to use. That's a loop. Maybe you mean that.

It's Rosenheim, by the way.

10-11 hours for a 600 mile run when it is quiet.

Indeed you aren't planning to drive all that fast.
Either that or you are planning lots of stops on the way.
