Ahhh the M56 total nightmare and like others I do not miss it either (I only use it a few times a year now luckily!)

If you have to use it everyday have you considered using the A51,A54,A556,A49 combination? That gets you near to Warrington/Runcorn and is a bit of a nicer run (bar the Kelsall red light cameras).

Yes, but that really does take a long time.

A long time? Try an extra 10 minutes or 20 minutes a day wink. If there is a crash and heavy traffic on the M56 quite an easy one to make up (as most have said you rarely get anywhere near 70, most of the route above is 40/50/60).

I do something similar instead of taking the M20 to work, a) because of the number of reoccurring crashes on the M20 (one of the recent bigger ones being someone going the wrong way) b) because it is more interesting to actually drive rather than the boring nature of the M20

Oh and having actually done Winsford via M56 against my dad going the A roads from Winsford he got home before me, both in rush hour traffic.

Another multiple-car pileup yesterday. I'm sure almost all these problems are caused by people driving too close to the car in front. Tailgating seems to be endemic to that stretch of motorway.

I used to go from Chester to Runcorn daily. Times I went wasn't to bad general traffic but steady speed all the way to work apart from one day a week...............

Friday

I can guarantee if you finish 5pm you will be in traffic for at least a hour or 2 getting back utter bloody farce. Glad I dont do it anymore & moved jobs into Chester itself
