Newbie here, apologies if asked and answered a hundred times. The Hubby and I are attending the Revival in September. We have 3 days to get to Dollar in Scotland. Would like to amble through some pretty places. Predictably the Cotswolds. From there on up I really have no clue. Would like to see a bit of Hadrian's wall, Yorkshire Dales, etc. Loved the Scottish Borders last year when there. This is a car centered trip as we then go on a vintage car tour of the Highlands. We've never been to England, just Scotland. Living in wide open spaces here in Oklahoma the distances throw me for a loop. Don't want to spend a fortune on accommodation, we like pubs with rooms and inns in small towns. Basically want help deciding where to stop for the night. Thanks for any input!

From Goodwood I would set off for Salisbury, then head for Stonehenge, Marborough, Cirencester, Stow-on-the-Wold, Stratford-upon-Avon, then by-pass Coventry and by-pass Leicester to Newark-on-Trent. From there head north via the A1 to York, then A1(M) and A68 to Jedburgh on towards and around Edinburgh and on to Dollar. Cheap accommodation can usually be found at Travelodge but usually better to use TripAdvisor or Booking.com. You can use ViaMichelin or Google Maps to refine routes and timings. Hope this gives you some reasonable ideas.

Thank you for your reply!

I'm thinking of the 3 nights we have to spend on the road, stay the first night around Stratford-upon-Avon. Just not sure where to stop for night 2. Night 3 I'm looking for someplace interesting in the Borders, possibly a return to Duns to revisit the Jim Clark Room.

So where to spend night 2 is my biggest question I'd say. Somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales or Lake District? Is that reasonable to allow some ambling along the way?

The route from Salisbury to Marlborough and on past Swindon has a few variations. If you're planning in that great detail ID be happy to tell you my favourite (when I'm not posting from my phone in an airport Wetherspoon's...)

York might be a good nightstop as it is a popular and ancient tourist city.

Would love that, thank you! Not sure how much detail we will plan on, but that area seems a good one for that!

This is the route I'd take from Salisbury to the Swindon area if I was on holiday. Some driving roads, some scenic routes, minimal transit sections. I get a bit hazy north of the M4, but I put Prescott in as a destination as it has car-based value of its own - hillclimb venue, home of the Bugatti Owners' Club and venue for a Vintage Sports Car Club meet in the summer amongst other things - might be worth a stop in its own right. Long time since I've been though, so not sure what's there or what the best approach is.

Stonehenge is only a few miles off the route, so may be worth a visit if that's your thing. If you do go, approach from Salisbury on the A360 or from Durrington/Larkhill on the B3086. Avoid the A303.

Looking at where Goodwood is, you may achieve a similarly good drive going north into the South Downs AONB, across towards Winchester, then north, crossing the M4 west of Newbery through the North Wessex AONB. Very smart countryside over that way, but I don't know it well enough to recommend routes. And Winchester cathedral isn't as good as Salisbury's.
