Hi all, I'm flying into London on the 25th June and leaving on the 24th July.

I'm going to catch up with family for a few days in the UK and then planning on doing a road trip. The plan was initially to go down to Barcelona, then through the south of France, Italy, Germany. However we are leaning more towards Scandinavia now as neither of us has been there before.

By the time we've spend a few days in the UK and a night on the way back before flying back on the Sunday, then this leaves us with about three weeks to play with.

Is this enough time and does anyone have any recommendations on places to go, avoid etc.

I'd like to see places like Copenhagen, Stockholm as well as take in some countryside and scenery, lakes etc.

I know that the weather won't be anywhere near as hot as southern Europe but will it be warm enough to go swimming.

I was thinking about getting the ferry to Dunkirk, so this will take some time to get up to Denmark, with maybe a stopover in Amsterdam on the way.

I'm then thinking Copenhagen, ferry to Oslo, across to Stockholm, ferry to Turku, drive down to Helsinki, ferry to Tallinn, then back across the Baltic states, Poland etc.

Is this realistic or will I be pushing it?

Distances are huge. Traffic levels are low, but speeds are fairly low, too. Norwegian speeding tickets are expensive.

yes

Copenhagen is great. You could then drive across to Malmo using the Oresund Bridge/tunnel it is epic in my opinion and then run up to Stokholm passing Sweden's 2nd biggest lake, (I think) along the way, Lake Vattern, at Jonkoping.
I've done the route you are on about, ferry from Stokholm to Turku and then drove to Helsinki and then another ferry over to Tallinn and drove onto Latvia and Lithuania, Poland etc. All this was always done in a lorry, moving gear for shows from one city to another. All the places are fine with plenty to see and do, but if I was going back to do a road trip in a car, i'd turn left at Stokholm and head for Oslo passing Djuro the National park on the way, this has Swedens biggest lake smile From Oslo i'd then fancy taking the E16 to Bergen just for the stunning drive and the chance to drive through the Laerdal tunnel, the longest road tunnel in the world i believe. 15.2 miles long cool
I've only done the Oslo to Bergen route once, back in 2006 but it was truly epic, and that was in a wagon, I would love to do it again by car so that I could stop off at some of the places along the way, which wasn't possible in the truck due to time schedules with work. Bergen is beautiful, but bloody expensive smile
Just realized, apparently there is no longer a ferry from Bergen to Newcastle, oops. Stopped in 2008 getmecoat
Good excuse to travel back across Norway on a different route, and then maybe down to Gothenburg and on from there.

Only a few Ideas for you, but if ever you get the chance, Stokholm to Oslo and onto Bergen is fantastic.

Thanks for the tips.

I take it that your a long distance lorry driver then, I remember wanting to be one myself when I was younger. Driving across the continent and getting paid for it.

I think that the Laerdal tunnel might be too far North for the time that I have. Yes I have been looking at a few bars and restaurants and the prices are certainly on the expensive side, even more though than here in Sydney, which is not exactly known for being cheap. I think that I may need to take out a small mortgage to pay for the trip.

I'm really looking forward to Copenhagen and drinking lots of delicious craft beer.

I was, sadly no more. For me it was the dream job, music, travel and i got payed for it.
Yes the route i said is a bit out of the way. Your route in your OP is perfectly fine, lots to see and do. Copenhagen is cracking, a bit more expensive than a lot of Europe, but not as bad as all of them, (Norway, Finland.) Sweden is pretty reasonable these days to what it was, and Stokholm is certainly worth a visit, as are the Baltics. I had some great times in Latvia and Lithuania and the money certainly used to go a fairly long way to the more mainland spots in Europe. You'll have a great time smile

Just drove from Oslo to Bergen (in Bergen now) via Geilo, Flam and Fjaerland. Epic epic scenery and almost zero traffic.

The Lardael tunnel was pretty boring (there are millions of tunnels), the road over the top much more interesting !

Ive driven to Oland on the East Coast of Sweden in one hit, left late in the Afternoon from the UK & drove through the night, brilliant drive, First leg on the Cannonball & from memory about 1100 miles, many done " quickly"

Not suggesting you attempt anything like that as your having a holiday but time it right & large distances can be covered quickly, Im certain the same trip would be a breeze over 2 days

I found Sweden a lovely country, the people were so welcoming & even the Police were polite & cut some slack " up to a point" It may not be the case now but when we went around 10 years ago if caught speeding in Sweden at I think more than 30kph over the Police can take your licence on the spot, you are then given a temp 48 hour licence, designed to give the swedes time to get home & I guess tourists time to get to the border. Swedes are then banned until the court case. Obviously if you loose your licence you can get out but then I know in France & prob many other countries you are expected to carry a licence when driving. As always if you are thinking of honing take a spare licence ( DVLA will issue another if you have lost yours & you might just find the old one again before you go)

Have a great trip & if you get to Sweden Im sure you will enjoy that as well

Last June we went to the Finnish Arctic and home via Sweden in two weeks.

- London to Hamburg (stayed in Lubeck, picked up as much German wine and beer as I could cram in the car before Nordic booze prices)
- Overnight ferry from Hamburg to Helsinki (last time we saw darkness)
- Helsinki to Arctic Rovaniemi in 4 days, seeing villages, lakes, and the factory where my car was built smile
- Rovaniemi to Stockholm in 4 days, including a day and night hiking and camping in the Skulesgkogen National Park on the Bothnian Coast
- Couple of days in Stockholm (finally saw darkness at night again!)
- Crossed "The Bridge" to Copenhagen where we spent 2 nights
- Home via overnight stop in Germany.

All-in, about 3000 miles, and no especially long days except the gung-ho first day to Hamburg on the Autobahn.

It was probably our favourite ever roadtrip, and that's in comparison to 2 US coast-to-coasts, multiple Italian trips, and a couple of runs to Romania/Bulgaria/Greece!

Let me know if you'd like details, mileages, etc because I actually built a spreadsheet to plan the trip paperbag

That sounds a fun trip

This years already booked for us again going South but next year Scandinavia is now back up the wish list so may be in touch, We did 3000 last year in a week so distance never an issue. Any areas to avoid with a low car, Ive now got an Alfa 4C so ground clearance & pants roads ( anything worse than the Uk / Italy ) would be a bit of a problem

We were in a Cayman with the lowered PASM suspension and had no problems with ground clearance, though I think I held up a bus on the few kilometres of well-kept gravel road on the way to the Orthodox Monastery at Uusi Valamo in Finland!

Overall, the roads were excellent, even in the extreme North. We did get pulled over by a Finnish motorbike policeman who was puzzled by a UK-registered Porsche in the middle of nowhere about 10km from the Russian border, but it was no more than a polite check, followed by a chat about cars and his ambitions for the Finnish Paralympic team which he coached smile

A great resource is http://wikitravel.org/en/Finland_in_ten_days_by_ca.... We took a course similar to days 1-6, with detours for Tampere and the Valmet factory.

It looks like a few people have done something similar and thanks for all the advice.

I've only got a few more weeks left to go now and I think that I've got the route sorted now.

It's definitely going to be a mammoth trip at 3,738 miles and my longest ever trip, comfortably beating Perth to Sydney that I've done previously.

I can't wait to be on the open road, taking in all of the stunning scenery (especially in Norway) and hopefully more sparsely populated roads. Aarhus looks a really cool city too and it seems to be the in place at the moment. I'm a big fan of Mikkeller and Scandinavian craft beer in general so will be drinking lots of that, even it costs a small fortune. I am however slightly worried about costs as you would expect a burger to be on the cheaper side of the dining experience. This doesn't seem to translate to Scandinavia though. I came across a place in Copenhagen that is $26 AUD (£13) for a bloody burger.

The weather seems to be good over there at the moment too, when I checked yesterday, all of the capitals were warmer than Barcelona. I hope that its like that when I'm there.

Looks great. I was lucky enough to do a cruise last year of the Norwegian Fjords, the first thing I did when i came back was to check out the possibility of a roadtrip over there!

I did a Scandinavian road trip last year in my little Fiat, camping anywhere and everywhere,as it's legal to

do so.

I drove all the way up to North Sweden, into Finland and across the Arctic Circle, doing 4945 miles in 15 days.

I don't quite understand OP's date and location thing, neither do I know your interests but in early July every

year,there's a massive American car show in Vasteras,Sweden,I've been 3 times,It's great.

Google "Power Big Meet" if interested and yes it is safe for work.
