I'd be VERY surprised if Galibier or Iseran will be open, surprisingly Bonette IS, not sure when Petite St Bernard is due open but it's usually mid June
Hey where did you get the info on Bonette from? Planning for next week and I had assumed Bonette would be closed but would be great to include it in the route if possible.

Hi!

I checked the Jausiers office de tourism website, when I looked about 10 days ago it was advising that it would be clised at certain times (basically at night)

Here you go - http://mobile.jausiers.com/GB/getting-there/by-roa...

Have you been there before?

From a driving point of view I prefer nortth to south, same with Vars, Vars is in my top 3

Got to agree, north to south on both is best, the views are stunning. Hope the weather is kind to you!

I think it's also because on both passes the turns are more "open" / faster on the north sides so climbing suits faster driving, particularly on standard brakes , Petite St Bernard is best south to north for me!

That is incredibly helpful - thank you! Will include Bonette and Vars in the route plan for next week. Haven't tried either of those before so looking forward to new tarmac. Will see if I arrange a north-south run. Out of curiosity what else is in your top 3?

I LOVE the road from Grenoble to Serre Chevalier travelling west to east when it's quiet (technically the Lauteret towards the end) Forclaz from Martigny towards Chamonix, Petite St Bernard south to north

I'm driving to the MC GP too next week but will be driving the wrong car for this kind of thing but I'm getting excited and jealous for those of you that are!

So this would be the Grenoble to Serre Chevalier route running into the Col d'Izoard and Col de Vars to Jausiers for the Col de la Bonette. Much better to do this west to east and north to south, i.e. from Grenoble to Jausiers?

Yes and Izoard is nice but you could cut it out by going Briancon directly to Mont Dauphin and starting Vars!!

BE CAREFUL if you are thinking about doing this route because the road from Grenoble Briancon was / is / might still be closed at La Grave, it was closed for ages, I don't know what the situation is now so check first!

Interesting you say that. GMaps doesn't like going through La Grave. Will see if I can find out what's happening there. I may have the time to run through Izoard but will consider bypassing it depending on where the Le Grave situation leaves me.

I promise you that if you do Grenoble-Briancon-Vars-Bonette and follow the road to Nice you will NOT arrive regretting that you hadn't done Izoard too! :-)

IF La Grave is still closed AND Galibier is closed you will have to think Chambery-Frejus tunnel-Montgenevre-Briancon

Thanks for mentioning this. It looks like La Grave is definitely closed and Galibier is closed until the 3rd of June (will be there only a frustrating 2-3 days beforehand). Don't really fancy the tunnel so might modify the original plan to include Bonette and Vars along with some parts of the Route Napoleon and a foray into the Vercors. Have you spent any time over there? Col du Rousset?

Don't think I have been there but don't let the tunnel put you off because as soon as you are through it you turn right to Briancon which is a good road in it's own right (col De Montgenevre) and from there you continue as normal!

That might be perfect for the way back to Calais (via the Vosges mountains) after the race actually. Over a couple of days I'm thinking that we'll head for the Col du Turini, Vars, maybe through the tunnel, up to the Vosges, and on to Calais. Would like to include Galibier and Iseran in the route but I'm expecting that both will be closed (this will be on the 31st).

Alternatively might take a run through Vars and then head west to go through the Vercors mountains. Will see how we feel after Sunday night in Monaco.

Oooof, back to Calais, it always feels like it's uphill and no incentive to get there!

The GP feels like a really long day to me but the group thing might spur you all on!

The bottom of the Lauterette was closed because one of the tunnels collapsed however they have built a new road around it. Officially its local traffic only and is listed as closed on a lot of sites but I've heard it's been open to everyone all winter.

DangerDoom, Co Rousette is my favorite. Lots of sweeping bends mixed with hair-pins, hardly any traffic and not a bad surface, though not as good as it was in '12 as winters take their toll. This was June '13...

Yeah it's always a slog back to Calais. We did Cagnes-sur-Mer to Calais in about 10 hours on the Monday last year (after about 6 hours of something resembling unconscious 'sleep').

Awesome video. We stumbled across the Col du Rousset last year and we must've gone back up and down about 4 or 5 times before moving on. Have you found any other gems in that area?
