After my first trip on the Mumbai Pune expressway, I increased my life insurance for the return journey.

It's that bad!

3 weeks in Ahmedabad driving out into the villages. Never ever again, if you weren't being cut up by nutters who thinks God will protect them, its negotiating impromptu cow roundabouts on a 4 lane highway!!

My wife and I went to Mumbai back in 2006 for my brother's wedding reception (our parents are from there). My wife is Scottish and had never been to India before, whereas I've been going since I was a nipper, to visit family. We went on one of the new expressways that was marked with 4 lanes on each carriageway and our driver had to negotiate people pulling handcarts, people using a horse and cart, people moving cows, cows by themselves (both moving and stationary), scooters with whole families on them (parents and 2 children), motorbikes, cars of all types and crazy truck drivers. No-one stuck to a lane, in fact many used the lane markings as guide over which to drive the centre of the vehicle. The lanes weren't always marked out evenly either. No one indicates, they just move and toot the horn at the same time.

You definitely take your life in your hands on the roads there!
