Hi all,

With so many trip threads on here I'll keep this brief! driving

1. Kicked things off with a sharp & fast journey down to Besancon to watch Mr Gilmour...

2. Headed over to Switzerland, taking in the Grimsel Pass & Furka Pass - absolutely stunning pieces of tarmac and well recommended. We stopped at the top of Furka and paid to see the Glacier - definitely worth the stop!

3. Our holiday took us towards Germany (spending a week there), so used the Klausen Pass as it came recommended from some guys I know who went a few years ago

4. Spent the first week with my brother and so managed to get some half decent hiking in

5. Our campsite in Austria - ours is the small tent in the middle biggrin

6. More hiking - incredible views!

7. Would go back again just for the ice cream..! lick

8. Took in the Rossfeld Panorama - this is a toll road in southern Germany near to Berchtesgaden. Wonderful views all around - it was quiet with little in the way of traffic and so plenty of opportunities to check everything works biggrin

9. The second part of the holiday took us down through Austria and into Northern Italy and so the Grossglockner was an obvious choice for our route. Words fail to describe just how awesome this place is...

10. We got there early with the intention of stopping a few times for food & hiking etc so didn't mind the tourists but my advice is to stay there late - after 7pm ish.

11. The roads become empty and it seems only those truly interested in driving are left. Happy times smile

12. The final week saw us through down to Lake Como (staying in Varenna), not before driving Stelvio.

13. Unfortunately I have no decent pictures of what turned out to be the best day - I was allowed out on my own to drive Route 28 from Mustair (Italy/Swiss border) down to St Moritz via Zernez - I'd been told about this but didn't know if I'd have the time. I would drive day/night just to get back to this place - an epic road.

We spent just over three weeks on the road, stopping in places for between 2-4 nights depending on the level of interest we had. I thoroughly recommend this - I saw today that our beloved pound has hit 1.10 against the Euro and that still would not stop me heading back even if I had to camp the whole time!

The plan next year is to head down further and do more of Italy.

Total mileage = 4,413
Total smiles = 4,413

Road trips in the Alps are great.
By far the best way to holiday in Europe I find.

Good post and great pics by the way, looks like you got some very clear days to take in the scenery.

Many thanks 🙂

Weather for the first week was torrential - see first pic taken at Reims.... final week from Austria to Italy was fab - Italy seems to be the place to be to guarantee some good weather 😎

When we travel in europe its usually late spring early summer, something like end of May or early June. The weather is usually great. Its also good when travelling through the Alps as there is a lot of the snow still left on the mountains with lots of melt water running off the tops creating huge water falls.
You also get the spring flowers colouring the fields with the benefit that most of the tourists have not yet hit the area.

Maybe something to bare in mind on a next trip?

(Then you don't have to enter Italy wink - not my favourite place to travel on the roads. We tend to stick to Germany & Austria primarily, only entering Italy or France if we have to. Totally avoiding Switzerland due to their hatred of cars and foreigners).
