Went down the B4391 in my S660, really loved it. Best road driven that weekend in Wales!

If you are doing the A5 I'd really be tempted with the dive off after Pentrefoelas to Ysbyty Ifan and over to Ffestiniog. The road over the top is fabulous (check it on googlemaps), then through Rhyd, Beddgelert and past Llyn Gwynant back to Pen y Pass below Yr Wyddfa.

Probably add about 30 minutes to your journey?
Yes that's a very good shout - only possible drawback is the road from Beddgelert up towards Pen y Pass is on the sightseeing coach itinerary and if two of those big boys meet halfway up the hill on the narrow & bendy section it can be a right old faff-fest.

Another option I sometimes take is from Shrewsbury go Welshpool, Dolgellau and then up to Ffestiniog.

An M2 sounds absolutely ideal OP. My 2 series diesel not quite so good but still not bad driving
I've driven the route dozens and dozens of times and never met a coach! Ever.

Hi all,

I’ve got a full weekend planned and an extensive (800+ mile) route - Chepstow, Brecons, mid-Wales, north Wales, then back again with friends in Renaultsport Clio Trophys.

Does anyone have any local knowledge or recent experience of any troublesome roads, roadworks, closures, diversions etc.

Thanks in advance

Sorry bumping thread - any Google routes I can use as a starting point? Doing a weekend in June. Day 1 will be from Swansea northbound hopefully finishing in nw Snowdonia somewhere . Sunday llanberis /Snowdonia roads then hop back to England onto the motorway network and back to Surrey. Any help appreciated!!

You don’t need to go that far, a4069 black mountain road heading east, a4059 towards penderyn, brecon to upper chapel road, devils staircase, Rhayader to the elan valley to devils bridge. A lot depends on what car you are in.

Be aware that several roads now have average speed cameras on them -this includes the A4069 Llangadog -Brynaman road, which is subject to a 40mph limit. For what it's worth, if you are in that area I'd take the road from Heol Senni south to Ystrafellte (not sure of its number): while the surface isn't great, the climb out of the Senni valley is spectacular, and there's a hairpin every bit as good as the Cuckoo Bends on the 4069. Best of all, it is undiscovered.

Are they real? How did they get power up the mountain?

This is a cracking northern/Snowdonia route for when you get to Llanberis;
