Many years ago I was driven by a colleague to a meeting down the M3. He insisted on staying in the middle lane. When I asked why he did it he said he was doing 65mph so that was the lane he should be in at that speed. Apparently lane 1 for lorries at 56, lane 2 for 65, lane 3 for faster. Bit of an eye opener that was. Never bothered getting a lift from him again.
I've said it before, I truly believe that this mindset has a big bearing on lane discipline, "slow" and "fast" lane, don't want to go in the "slow" lane as that's where the lorries and old people go as they are slow, don't want to go in the "fast" lane as that's were all the lunatics in their Audis and BMW's go, driving too fast, the middle is perfect! I've even seen the Police on TV refer to it as the "fast lane".

They need to run adverts on TV about lance discipline.
Hows an infomercial on jousting going to help lane disipline on a motorway? hehe

The one that makes me shake my head in disbelief is when, particularly in heavy traffic, a vehicle enters the motorway from a slip, goes straight to L1/L2 then exits at the next slip a few miles down the road.

The government have just spent a large number of millions to add a 3rd lane to the Teesside area of the A19 (over 2 years of misery) for all the car drivers to vacate lane 1 and move into 2 and 3. So back to having 2 lanes.
I just stay in 1 and undertake until I pull onto the sliproad I need to exit.

Makes sense for duel carriageways.

I went down the M6 to Crewe and back on Saturday, loads of cars just sat in lane 3. There was a guy in a Megane with a transporter trailer bombing along in lanes 1 and 2 undertaking them all.

I think it’s worse due to the smart motorway cameras so more people don’t go above 70.

The overhead gantry on the M3 sometimes says 'keep left unless overtaking', if i was in charge of gantries it would say something different.....
My wife commented on this the other day, I simply said if someone is driving like that does she honestly think they are going to read a sign like that.

Yep, it's the same on all motorways or multi lane roads, what I find odd is the ones entering the motorway from an on sliproad, going straight to lane 2 regardless if lane 1 is occupied or not.
This..
I often wonder if certain makes of car will physically not let you into lane 1
It's the whole "slow lane" "fast lane" rubbish, so many people see themselves as not slow drivers so they don't drive in the slow lane. Others see themselves as fast driver and so only use the fast lane. Everyone else has brains and uses the road properly and don't get me started on caravans that refuse to use the left hand lane.
When ever i am towing mine, unless i need to be in another lane, left hand lane branching off in a direction i am not going for example, then i stay in the left hand lane and will only over take when it is clear i am travelling quicker.
