Rozelle Interchange opened today - it’s an underground motorway interchange with three levels and several connections to the surface, just outside the CBD of a city of 5m people…

Its scale is truly massive - 16km of road tunnels, $4Bn, 4.5 years to build. I worked on the design development and it’s nowhere near as complicated to follow as the headlines suggest, but that’s not good for headlines!

We could do with something like that in certain places but if we were to do it here it would take the 4.5 years just to think about it and cost it, another 10yrs to make and go about 3 times over budget, then add tolls on it.

Then start building it and immediately cut off the top 50% and make the bottom section finish 2 miles from its intended destination leaving people getting off in a dilapidated industrial area with poor transport links

And then sell off all properties bought under a compulsory order to your pals on the cheap

Have I missed anything?

PS Rozelle looks epic from a bloke/boy/girl/nerd/geek point of view

It is - I was part of the design development team for three years - learned lots!

As for the total time - 4.5 years was just the construction period. Planning and development for started about 10 years earlier. In fact, the whole general scheme, of which Rozelle is part, was conceived in the 1940s, so not really that quick…biggrin
