On the contrary, I'll see your 4wd big girls blouse of a car and raise you something more challenging from Spring of this year in Welsh Wales biggrin

Lovely S2 btw thumbup
hehe Thanks and good effort thumbup

You weren't up the Black Mountain Pass and the Elan Vallery with a large group of 1M's last September were you? I don't think i'll ever see so many in one place again.

Just to bring things full circle back to GT3's wink

Tried this today and came away feeling that it is vastly overrated. Not a patch on some of the roads up north around Kirkby Lonsdale and up to hartside. Oh well nothing ventured nothing gained. I actually preferred some of the surrounding roads.

I am not a big fan of the triangle, i think the B4501 section is quite boring. As you say, the surrounding roads are much more interesting.

Not really a bike road IMO, I'd also say it's more challenging in something quickish.

Hey Pete, am very much in your debt for the recommendation of the 4391. At risk of sounding too much like top gear, it is epic.....

A bit of an overused location given the magazine shoots but couldn't resist...

It was like motoring nirvana today at the evo triangles. At one point both directions for a good ten mins was mixture of classic and modern performance cars. smile

It is a fantastic bit of (Largely empty ) road isn't it. The views over Tremadog Bay from the top are spectacular as well.

I've just got back from an awesome day in north Wales.

I had to put some miles on a test car from work and had an afternoon tea experience voucher to be used, so I convinced the girlfriend that Llandudno would be the best place to go.

On the way there we detoured via the Evo triangle, one run each way. It certainly lives up to the hype - not quite as good as good as the highlands, but close!

On the way back from Llandudno we took the A525 from the A55 to Ruthin, which was a good road, then the horseshoe pass which was almost as good as the Evo triangle - the view from the top was spectacular!

I'm looking forward to getting up there again in my MR2.

Myself a few people are going for a run upto the Triangle in a few weeks and were looking for somewhere to stop along the way, either on the triangle or nearby for a drink and maybe a bite to eat.

Can anyone recommend it?

Also are there any fairly big lay bys (10 cars) along the triangle?

Thanks

There's a Pub (Not open I don't think) with a big car park at the top of the triangle , the pic earlier in this thread of the Focus's is there. Betws Y Coed is nearby for Pubs and stuff. Touristy but lots there.
llangollen has several nice pubs/restaurants too but personally I'd head for the Groes Inn near Conwy for decent grub, some more good roads on the way (traffic permitting)

Thanks very much!

I've done a route up the A5 towards then onto the B4391 into Bala then north towards the triangle. I could change it slightly to add these places in. Thanks very much!

I haven't been up there for a few years now so does it get busy on a Sunday afternoon?

The pub at the top if the triangle looked a bit closed yesterday.

There's a pretty big lay by just down the road from it too.

Ok this is the route I've made,

Would people make any changes to that?

When you do the B4391 after Bala which is magnificent, DONT turn off on to the B4407. Its a bumpy single carriageway road that is no fun and goes on forever. Instead continue on the B4391 and take in the views from the lay-by at the top. If you ever read car mags like EVO you'll recognize the photo locations on that bit of road. You'll miss all of that if you turn right. Continue on down in to Llan Ffestiniog and take the A470 instead through Blanaeu and on towards Betws. its a great road in its own right.
Personally I would take the A4501 off the A5 and back towards Bala then go back over the Berwyn mountains and retrace your route back home on the B4391/B4396 rather than follow the A5 through llangollen (Unless you want to do the Horseshoe pass)

Well that would depend on your choice of steed . . . . .

Hard work but doable in the one on the right :

And about as much fun as you can have on the road in a car in the one on the left smile

Does this seem more like it? I've added the horseshoe pass into it aswell:

But you miss out on this ^^^

and certainly in a GT3 you cant carry any reasonable speed at at all without lunching the splitter. Its doable but the alternative is much better. The remaining stretch of the 4391 is wonderful. And any road that requires you to stop and reverse 100 yds if you meet anything coming the other way is rubbish for a hoon IMHO.

The A470 is a blinding stretch from Blanaeu to Betwys as well.

If you're going to do the horseshoe pass, you should do Nant Y Garth Pass as well:
