I'm going from Llan Ffestiniog to Bala and continuing on to Penybontfawr, possibly to the south eastern end of Lake Vyrnwy...
But how do I get to Aberystwyth from there?
Re-trace my route north-west to Bala and all the way on the A4212 to Trawsfynydd?
From there south on the A470 to Dolgellau, then pick up the A487 to Machynlleth?
Then just outside Machynlleth does anyone have experience of the unnamed road from Forge, southeast to Dylife, joining the B4518 just north of Staylittle?

Many thanks for the responses, I think I've got my route planned with the helpful tips above. I've got approval for crashing (not literally) in Dursley, permission from Mrs Moospeed so just need to arrange some nice weather and the day off.
I'm guessing that weekdays are preferable to weekends? Though I'll be on the road early, by the time I'm a couple hundred of miles into it I'm guessing the caravan brigade and dawdlers will be out in force.

Yep weekdays are better, when are you going?
I'm off to north Wales in a few weeks myself, really looking forward to taking my GTI on some of the amazing roads up there!
Found this website for mobile speed camera locations, not that I need to speed to enjoy a drive!

I'd head west over Bwlch y Groes to Dinas Mawddwy then down to Machynlleth to join the staylittle road there, the views are still good in the oposite direction too. Especially aroun the Clewedog

If I was you I'd head south and over the old Severn Bridge then through Chepstow and either up the Wye valley or the road a little to the left , the Devauden and Monmouth roads then A40 and Heads Of the valleys road to Brecon. Then the brilliant Brecon to Bullith Wells road (B4520) then A470 to Rhyader. If you have the time , traversing the Elan Valley reservoirs and then the Devils bridge road is brilliant but out of your way rather. Instead carry on up the A470 to Llanidloes and take the B4518 out of the town. Then take the unnamed road through the village of Dylife and up and over the moors to Machynlleth. Its a fantastic road.
then the A487 and A470 past Dolgellau and the A494 up to Bala then turn on to your planned route in Snowdonia. Personally I wouldn't bother with the Horseshoe pass and instead I'd head back to your original route over the Berwyn mountains from Bala to Knockin on the B4391/4 which is the dogs danglies.
Good luck
As said, many thanks for the tip-offs. I've used Streetview on some of those road and I'm properly looking forward to this even more now. Here's my modified route (couldn't take a screenshot for some reason).
Added plenty of the interesting bits, only bit I have sacrificed is Llanberis Pass as it was getting a bit long (don't wanna fall asleep on that boring schlep back to Kent)

Should I add Llanberis back in and just take a load of energy drinks

Good question, it'll be a weekday (thanks for confirmation), before the end of the month, not between the 15-19th, when the weather forecast is good and as long as it doesn't clash with the fact I'm selling my house and the wife's car -I'm off to north Wales in a few weeks myself, really looking forward to taking my GTI on some of the amazing roads up there!
so a bit random really ha ha
Found that the Google maps app and website on my android phone can't handle that waypoint route just posted. So I'll be printing off the junction maps - old school. Not that unhappy about that as the Satnav can be a bit of a distraction sometimes.
Might keep a speed camera warning running but I'm not going to be ragging it. After a 'spirited tour' and ensure that I make it back in one piece. Even at 70-80% in the elise it should be good fun.

Yea, there are a few spots on the A5 section I could imagine them setting up cameras in. The A5 is pretty dull there anyway, so I just use it to cruise and give the car a bit of a rest.No doubt there are other hot spots but that's one i know about for sure
Enjoy
Had my Golf GTI serviced this week with some new front tyres as well, so really looking forward to my trip up to north Wales. Anybody got a link to book the weather?
Well I finally got around to doing my Welsh Tour on Thursday, route devised from the tips in this thread
I saw the white 4C as well on the triangle Allyc85, waved at a guy hiding in the bushes with a camera. And a red V6 Exige with a camera. A yellow TT caning it (I think it was yellow).
So this is the interesting part of my day, and yes Dblue - certainly was a full on day. 696 miles in under 24 hours in the bucket seats of a Sport 160 was quite an experience. The uninteresting part was the slog from Kent but not as much as the slog back to Kent, just wanted a Fast-forward button from Chirk really.
I'd intended to get to Elan Valley for 10-ish for a spot of breakfast but was going so well that I actually got there at 08:30, so no brekkie until Bala - seems Wales was shut for food
It was absolutely heaving down, I started out for a little walk upto the dam but thought better of it.
Few more pics from familiar surroundings.
And a bit dirtier at the end after starting the day in "freshly detailed" spotless condition.
First time driving in Wales for at least 16-17 years and back then it would've been just Llanberis Pass so this was a great eye-opener.
Definitely going to come back for more, and I'm guessing I'll make it a two day trip to fit in the parts I missed and also break up the Kent-Wales motorway stint.
I'd say it ranked in my Top 3 drives, and the number one spot I'll almost certainly never do again as it was when I got lost on my way to Spa trying avoid the bumpy motorway. Great stuff, thanks for the tips folks.

You will love it, I did in mine
