Yeah the southern leg isn't all that great, but the run from the northern-most point heading south-west has you ducking and diving every-which-way! There's also a particularly sharp left-hander just after a blind crest that very nearly caught me out the first time I drove it - I was pleased to have decent brakes that day eeklaugh

The southern leg is the A5. What passes for a motorway in North Wales. Its just a link to join the 2 interesting bits together

I've done 5 hours tonight having started at the evo triangle. Some absolutely brilliant roads the evo triangle was the worst road of the lot.

Bala lake, llanberis pass, beddgelert, Porthmadog and Llangollen all covered with plenty in between a couple of cyclists and ramblers gave me a load of verbal for making safe progress I think mainly due to the noise of the car.

I'm heading over to Wales for the weekend, staying near Barmouth, then heading over to Chester.

Looking at the map, the A458 seems like the direct way from Birmingham to Barmouth, but are there any more interesting routes? Maybe dropping down onto the A44, then up through Wales somewhere?

Also what would be a good route to Chester, we have the whole morning to play with, so can take the fun route, rather than most direct, it would be good to drive the EVO triangle again, but I hear there are better roads too - any suggestions?

OK, from Brum head up the M54 to Telford and then Shrewsbury. Couple of miles north of Shrewsbury take the B4396 to Knockin and follow it through to where it becomes the B4391 and over the Berwyn Mountains to Bala. Follow the A4212 out of Bala then take the B4501 to Cerrigydrudion to get to the EVO triangle , short bit of the A5 then more B4501 to the top of the triangle and then back down the Western leg (A458). But it takes you out of your way. Better if going to Barmouth to to leave the triangle for the run back to chester and take the A494 out of Bala then the A496 to Barmouth.

Going Barmouth - chester , A296 and then A470 (straight boring bit unfortunately) back to the A4212. Turn off the A4212 on to the brilliant B4391 back to Ffestiniog, A496 back up to Blaenau ffestiniog and the A470 pass (Good twisty bit of the A470 ) to Betwys. Then the A5 and A458-B4501 EVO triangle.

After that if you have time take the B4501 south towards Bala and the A4212 then A494 out of Bala but turn off on to the B4407 through llandrillo and back to the A5. Horseshoe pass maybe out of llangollen or the A5104 that takes you north of Wrexham and up near Chester.

Perfect! Like you say, I'll leave the triangle until the way back to Chester, but both those routes sound awesome!

I've been a bit busy since getting back from Wales, but the route Dblue suggested to get there was great, much better than the slog up the A5.

The driving was curtailed a bit, due to a mountain bike related A&E visit, but the remainder of us manage to get to the EVO triangle, the weather was a bit grim up there, but it was fun. I think I actually preferred it in the wet in my MR2, to in an XKR in the dry, which was my previous visit.

Went earlier today. Saw quite a few bikes and some kit cars.

On route (M56) i spotted two 911 GT3.

one 997 Gen 2 GT3 (was in white with a private plate) and a 996 GT3 in Yellow (GT03YOB)

Great roads for sure did the triangle a few times was in my daily, views on Llyn Bran were awesome! Will go back again later this summer.

Fantastic trip to wales this weekend just gone. somewhat blessed by the weather and driving gods that for sure.

good bunch too...

Friday:
meet at the BP just off J5 of the m4 and then head west.
good trip across in the sun and head up towards Brecon to get on some decent roads.

we took the A40 across to LLandovery for some fuel and late lunch
then headed onto the A4069 Black mountain pass. its just a normal A road until you hit the Cattle grid and then its like a scene out of the Alps. tight twisty roads going steep up hill, tight hairpins, sheep and other animals on the road so you have to have your wits about you!
amazing roads with twists, turns, cambers and just the best views ever.
time for some pics at one of the fave Evo stops:

over the top and down the other side which was another amazing drives with longer sweeps and some challenging turns. great great fun. hard to keep your eye on the road as distracted by the incredible views

full squad arrives:

back up the mountain pass to Llandovery to then take the A483 up to Llandindrod Wells for the overnight at the metropole hotel. that is a great road too with some really open roads with some brilliant sweeping bends to test the cars.

had a lovely overnight stay at the metropole, great food and a great host in Justin.

Saturday:
Justin agreed to come out to play in his Z4M couple and show us some of the local roads.
time for a team shot

Head out up some of the B roads to find one of the quiet MOD roads which was a giggle and you can see for miles. it had started to get a bit wet by that time which was a shame but still fun

headed over to the Elan Valley area for a coffee and bite to eat before heading up the side of the 3 dams.

headed up the windy road to Llanidroes then over towards the Devils Bridge. we then headed north up to Bala on the A4210 then A44 then A470 which had some great parts but then there is some traffic at times. we wanted to take some of the B roads but time and fuel were getting a bit low.

hit Bala then took then took the left onto the A4212 which is a great roads with great views. then the right onto the B4391 to Ffestiniog which is just an epic bit of road. tight, windy, ups and downs, see for miles and some great scenery. we were getting low on fuel so rather than do it a few times we headed up to Betsw-y-coed to get some fuel in the shell.

then took the A5 out to the evo triangle. it had been raining on the way up but sun had been out so roads were nice and dry by the time we got there. A543 is a great bit of road and really opens out to some stunning views and twisty roads. you instantly recognise it from the magazine pics and you tube footage. then took the B4501 down the other side of the triangle which is just an epic road. turned around and did it all again as the A5 on the 3rd bit of the triangle is not that great and busy at the weekends.

]

stopped at the Giler Arms for a beer and then back to Betws-Y-Coed to the Dragon hotel for the overnight. great food and good accommodation for the price so went well. bit of a lack off off road parking is the only negative but cars were fine there.

Sunday:

early rain so sleep in and then took the A5 out towards Snowdon area to do the Llanderis pass. come off on the A4086 at Capel Cruig and then head down some amazing roads past Snowdon and that whole area. followed the loop around and back onto the A5 and then home.

not many pics as I was driving so will update in due course.

great trip, weather, banter, driving and never saw one camera or police car!!

Had a wedding to attend over this side of the world this past weekend, seemed like an excellent excuse to take in some of the UK's best driving roads at the same time. Headed up a day early, reached Brecon by 9:30am, did the usual A4069 pass - a fantastic, well sighted, enthralling stretch of tarmac, only limited by its length and the sheer number of sheep wandering all over the road! After driving a couple of other roads around the Beacons, it seemed I'd seen the best of the area, so I took the decision to head North to the triangle....sadly, much of the day was wasted on congested, albeit scenic, coastal A roads making the trip to Snowdonia, and it was late afternoon by the time I arrived.

Mind you, what a road the A543 is. More flowing than the 4069, sighted just as well and with far less sheep it was a real treat. Unfortunately, still nothing on the roads they have on the continent, but enjoyable none the less. However, there was one minor disappointment, that being I was hoping to find a particular stretch of road pictured in an old copy of Evo, but it never arrived....anyone care to shed some light on where this is?

I reckon the EVO shot is the start of the llanberis pass going up to Pen-Y-Pass

Yep I think that's the llanberis pass and further up from that shot is a pub on one side and a car park with a big viewing area to the side.

The other road that you can see on that evo picture on the other side of the valley is very tight and twisty but ends up being quite good a little further down as it runs alongside a river and out towards Porthmadog way.

I was there Sunday afternoon. Saw a very nice Ferrari 512 near Snowdon, and a speed van on the triangle by Llyn Brenig.

I think (hope) I was there too early for the speed van!

For legal reasons I never cracked 60 mph

Was it a white RS? I was meant to go down Sunday with a convoy of about 50 evos but family came first smile my mate went down but said he couldn't find the group so just had a solo blast.

It was Chris, looked rather nice too.

He stopped at the Riverside Chocolate House where I was having a coffee, thought I would see it later on the Triangle. I gave him a wave as you do.

I have some time off coming up in October and the OH will be away on a solo trip to Asia.

So, being a car-minded guy with time on my hands, I thought about heading over to the EVO Triangle for some decent roads.

However, I do not have a Porsche or an Elise, even an old MX5. I have nothing remotely interesting to drive.

What I do have is a 3 year old, diesel rep-mobile with a fuel card.

Am I wasting my time? Will driver for 4 hours to get there, drive around a bit in my boring car, realise it was pointless and then just drive 4 hours home?

Opinions greatly received

WhenI went earlier in the year I was with a couple of friends, 2 of us were in sports cars and my other friend, who isn't a car guy was in his diesel Eos. He absolutely loved it up there - although the range prediction on his dash dropped by over 100 miles in one loop of the triangle!
