We use this road for a driving meet.

Have to be careful though as it's narrow in places and the with several quarries on the road the surface can be an issue as is the tipper trucks during the day.
I drove that earlier today, great road in both directions.

Found this unexpected delight http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&ge... in the middle of my hoon too. Similar kind of road.

The Autocar suggestion of Tiverton to Minehead on the A396 is good, but it's not quite right. What you want is to take this route here: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&ge... Tiverton to Woolacombe, via Raleigh's Cross, Wheddon Cross and Porlock. 70-odd miles of pure brilliance, interspersed with a short pootle around Horner and Porlock. Not one camera on the whole route, and frankly you'll be doing well on most of it to get above 60mph... but it's fantastic.
Makes me smile so much to read this, as my parents house is very close to wheddon cross, I learnt to drive on these roads. Never realising how lucky I was until I moved to the city now : hello boring driving like everyone else. Still great when I go home and can hoon it around - the best is like you say most the time, you're not even breaking the limit biggrin

I'm driving from Londond to Bristol tomorrow so will try some of these suggestions (Alton - Basingstoke, Andover - Devizes and Devizes - Wroughton). Though that does add 1 hr 20 to my journey time according to google maps :s

I took my new toy out for it's first proper run today, and got a clear run up the A686 (Hartside) for the first time in years - have to admit it is a good bit of road when you don't get stuck behind people doing 25mph! I was having so much fun I carried on all the way to Haydon Bridge - I've never been down that stretch of the A686 before, it's a really good stretch with a mixture of several long straights interconnected by tight hairpins and some tricky complexes. I'll be doing that one again smile

Did that last Friday and Sunday nights. We were in a Landrover Defender with a 6 kayak trailer on the back, so got a few funny looks when we were passing dawdling (and some not so dawdling) cars.

Are you sure about that one? The scenery was spectacular but the road was ste for overtaking unless you have a bike.

Too many blind bends for my liking. Still, each to their own. I liked the rest of your selection though thumbup

The minor road from Fort William through Glen Nevis to the falls at Achriabhach. What I call a curly road, winding and undulating. The road doesn't go anywhere but that's all the better, you have to turn around and do it again in reverse.

I'm very VERY surprised that this post has gone on so long without anyone mentioning the A93 between Blairgowrie and Braemar (continue on to Banchory and further if you so wish.

I reckon I've driven almost every good road in Scotland (except those in the North Highlands and the Applecross road - top of the list!) and I reckon this is the best by far!

Tight and twisty 2nd gear corners like no other, places to open up 3rd gear and a couple of straight bits to get a rest (you'll need it!)
Plenty of undulations an pretty much every type of corner imaginable/in existance!

Once you get past the tight and twisty bit at Spittal of Glenshee road opens up to long fast 3rd and 4th gear sweepers that really test your guts (it takes at least 2 or 3 runs until you can persuade yourself that you really don't have to dab the brakes before that fast 3rd/4th gear corner! :P)

Scenery (as you come to expect and take for granted in Scotland) is immense. Mountains are Snow topped 8/9 months of the year - Glenshee has a ski centre with a loch or 2 along the way.

Only downsides are that since its so tight and twisty, there are often long spells where you cannot overtake and that it gets busy with tourists/coaches over summer months :-(

If your visiting Scotland, this is a definate detour :-)
Got to agree on the A93, however I would go from Blairgowrie to Dunkeld on the A923, then a quick trip up the A9 to Pitlochry, before blasting over the Moulin moor on the A924 then join the A93 at Blackwater via the B950. A bit of a detour but the Moulin moor is one of the greatest roads I've driven.

Just make sure you fill up in Pitlochry as a bit of "spirited" driving along this route will drain your tank very quicklybiggrin

If you fancy a nice run, I can recommend South Essex where I live. Either try the A127 from Basildon to Southend, where you can marvel at the new average speed cameras taking you from 70 mph down to 50mph, then 40 mph.

Alternatively, why not try the A13, where you can take in the fine sights of police hiding behind lorries in laybys with their guns, ARP Interceptor cars or Police sitting on a bridge filming you.

You might even get a momento of your journey as my mate did in the way of 3 points and a fine for being a mear 4mph over 70!!!

they cant give you 3 points and a fine for 4mph over the limit at 70mph... However if its pooring with rain or he did this in bad traffic maybe, in which case it would have been a fine for careless driving?

PS i regulary go up both these roads and havnt seen a police car/van ever.
