Hey up noobie here took the 'blade out yesterday and found an ABSOLUTELY MENTAL road the B6160 up past Kettlewell then Buckden an then turn left to Hawes. IMO a better road than the Ingleton one as its much less busy with 'el plod and caravaners etc. Watch it though as your coming closer to hawes its gets a bit mental and my mate nearly binned it. Beautiful view though.

Also go to otley turn left at the lights, over the bridge and take your first right this is a really nice road once you pass the housing area. The B6541 is its proper name. then as your going round turn left (sign posted norwood) follow this on over the little bridge follow this round and get ready for a sharp inclined hairpin. and then just stay on this road eventually it will go through a little wooded area then out and open. Over a crest then pull in for a brew at the Sunn inn. turn around come back but take the sign posted FEWSTON (amazing views over the reservoir) just over the crest follow this all the way on then turn left when your out on the tops at a T junction follow this back and it brings you back into Otley. One of my favourite blasts out. Although on a wednesday watch out for bikers (lots of them) as its a wed night meet at the sun.

Also from the sun you can come back via poole bank and turn off to go to the very famous (if a little over priced) Squires milk bar. At Sherburn In Elemet (just de click motorways on your sat-nav) for the best run.

The road past the pub next to the waterfalls? That's a cracking road, Poor surface for a mile or two but certainly makes up for it as you crest into Richmondshire.

Careful around here as there was BiB stood before Norwood coming from Lindley. We'd had a warning but he'd have been able to "Shoot" us for a good 1/2 mile.

I usually leave about 5 past 6 in the morning, and get to the office before half 8 without fail. The run back home can sometimes be a pain however, like last friday took 3 and a half hours after I had cleared Swindon in 50 minutes, which would have been the magic 2 hour run...I still think there is a sub 2 hour run there though. I drive almost the perfect car for the run now as its almost invisible. A Toyota Auris Diesel in stealth Grey. It attracts NO attention so I get left alone to get on with it!!! I once did the run in a Toyota Aygo 1.0. Pretty much flat out all the way and left foot braking like mad to help keep momentum up. That took less than 2 hours 20 minutes.

The string of bends from Clows Top through to Abberley in great, that tricky one at the bottom of the hill before you go up the hill to abberley village is ace and very difficult to get right. Its got good sight lines though so you don't get in anyones way if you get it a bit wrong.

What a drive! As I now live in Bridgnorth and regularly travel to Southampton I will have to try some of those deviations out myself.

I also use those B-roads in the Cleobury / Abberley area whenever I work in Worcester city centre (as opposed to the very tedious and slow A442/A449 through Kidderminster) and they are certainly good fun.

What time of the day do you drive this at though? I find it hard to believe you could consistently and reliably do it in 2:30 or less at any time other than the dead of night, unless you're on a bike.

Never mind top ten roads, there are a few good ones on my drive to work. Ok try this for a route.

A32 out of Fareham up to Droxford. Take a left in Droxford up North End Lane which becomes Hacketts lane and enjoy blast to B3035. Turn left onto this then almost straight away turn right onto Corhampton Lane which becomes Stake's Lane. I'm sure a few southerners will recognise this one as it becomes Belmore Lane which runs to Morestead. Follow the Morestead road then till you get to the fiddly A31 Link up to the A34, and head north. Should take you 22-25 Minutes to get onto the A34 from Fareham.

Go up the A34 till you reach the A4 Turning but use the B4000 West. Watch out for a Van at Wickham though. A quick left onto the A338 then right pretty much straight away puts you back on the B4000. Follow this through Lambourn and enjoy through to Shrivenham. Here go Left, west down the A420 till you join the A419 North West, which becomes the A417 after Cirencester. Before you get to the end of the A417 near the Baloon pub on the Birdlip, head towards Elkstone. Follow this straight through and you will pick up the A435 near Cowley. Follow this till you can double back on the A436 to pick up the A417 by the Air Baloon pub. This little detour means you can miss the big ques that build up there at busy times. A417 then A40 round Gloucester to pick up the A38.

Stick to the A38 up through Tewkesbury so long as its not flooded. Keep going up till you get to Worcester then take the A4440 up towards Wittington by the M5. Go left on the A44 briefly till you pick up the A4440 again for some roundabout fun. This takes you up to junction 6 of the M5, where you want to pick up the A449 towards Kidderminster. Get off at Ombersley though and take the A4133 towards Tenbury Wells. You then need to pick up the A443 and after a bit take the B4202 though Abberley to Clows Top and enjoy. Get on the A456 towards Newnham Bridge from Clows Top.

Much better than M27, M3, A34, M4 A419, A417, M5 teddium.

Now do that every day. Usually takes 2 and a half hours each way. Thats extreme comutting for you. I've yet to break the 2 hour barrier for that run, but got down to 2 minutes off in Shed of the Year 2006.

the road from great witley to cleobury is great and it starts just outside my house smile even going at the speed limit its still fun imo

It`s probably been covered on here but we came down the A702 Dalveen Pass road from Elvanfoot to Dumfries last Sunday. We had just picked up the 997 GT3 RS from Glasgow and were told of the road instead of the M74. Very pleased we took it. Lots of bikers out, so they know it`s good too! Some fantastic roads in Scotland, always love to visit.

Lovely road eh, usually a very quiet road, and those who are on it are kicking on anyways.

Watch out for sleepers though, they tend to frequent that road an make your usual B road hero look silly

I always have a good time on the A1120 from the A14 Stowmarket to Yoxford, Suffolk. The one speed camera was taken down some time ago (get in!) and I've never seen any Feds on the road.

they cant give you 3 points and a fine for 4mph over the limit at 70mph... However if its pooring with rain or he did this in bad traffic maybe, in which case it would have been a fine for careless driving?

PS i regulary go up both these roads and havnt seen a police car/van ever.
I drive these roads almost daily and between the M25 & Basildon, there always out.

The points thing, thats definately true because we couldent believe it when it happened.
I was always under the impression that they had to allow ten percent for speedometer inaccuracy plus two m.p.h. ......has this changed now?

That is just the advice given to the forces, it's not legally binding as far as I'm aware. They can technically do you for being 1 mph over the limit.

Spoonoff speaks the truth, sadly. ACPO (I think) guidelines are just that, and aren't binding AIUI.

Bucensoreder me...! I`ve often snuck past a traffic car that`s been trundling along at dead on 70 thinking they can`t do me as long as I stick to the "true" reading on my RoadAngel of 75 to 77.... I`ll think twice in future. Guess I`ve just been lucky so far..........

If you are going to go to squires, especially if you ae on a bike, then be very carefull as there has been lots of bib activity recently. Last time i was over that way, they pulled a zx6-r for noist pipes and a guy on an rsv4 for a small plate and were out in force all over the area, so just go easy guys'n'gals

Eff Me, that's me going on next year's TartanHoon then!

Mind you, the ground clearance on that second road looks rubbish!

Seriously though, some stunning photography there Steve.

Ta! I've done all those roads in a Caterham R500 - so ground cleareance isn't too bad. I grounded twice in the Aston... if you are thinking of bringing a Zonda, forget it.

I'll second the A686 Penrith-Alston-Haydon Bridge road.

I would heartily recommend the run from J37 of the M6 to Sedbergh, Kirby Stephen, Brough, Middleton in Teesdale, Stanhope, Edmundbyers, Corbridge. This makes an ideal alternative to the motorways for the Manchester to Newcastle trip and is just as quick.

The A696 from Newcastle to the A68 just north of Otterburn is fantastic once you're past Ponteland: fast, open and well-constructed. Continue up the A68 to Carter Bar for more of the same.

A rival to the A686 is the road from Bonchester Bridge, through Newcastleton and down to Canonbie. Years ago I borrowed my boss's 7 series and decided to take it up there: I hardly saw another vehicle and had one of the drives of my life.
I'm a lucky fker because all these roads are right on my doorstep - literally in the case of the A69! hehe

I'm with r129sl and schmeeky. Living in the Tyne valley we've got easy access to some great roads. I like the A68 from Stagshaw roundabout, upto the 5 lane ends, right on to the B6342 then left up the A696 on to the A68, Carter Bar, left on to the A6088 but very sharp left just before Bonchester Bridge on to the B6357 down to Saughtree, left to Kielder then C200, turn right for Bellingham, right onto the B6320 to Chollerford then pick up the B6318 back to Stagshaw - marvellous!!!!!

I spent a couple of days on the Isle of Harris/Lewis in the outer Hebrides last summer (September). Took my Puma up there, through Scotland, the Isle of Skye, then Ferry to Harris/Lewis. Got to say the most breathtaking scenery I've seen in the UK.

The roads were practically deserted. The views were simply stunning. Search for images of "Luskentyre beach" to see what I mean.

I'd really like to go back there in my Clio 200. Would really suit those twisty roads!
