Anyone got any recommendations for a route in Essex?

Couple of hours with a place to get some decent grub at the end of it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Take a look at: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en...

Whereabouts in Essex are you?

As a general rule north Essex is your best bet, but there are some nice roads near the coast to - the one that runs from Burnham-on-Crouch to Bradwell-on-sea (I think it's that one...) especially springs to mind. It's definitely near Bradwell.

Going back to the north of the county, one of the best roads is the B184. From Chipping Ongar, head up throught The Rodings, through Gt Dumnow, past the Bardfields to Thaxsted and on to Saffron Walden if the urge takes you. From there I don't think it's possible to find a dull road back - they're all pretty good and usually quiet enough and wide enough to be driven enthusiastically. Also, if you head west, past the M11 there is a great road from Bishops Stortford to Much Hadham - could maybe drop down to that from Saffron Walden...

This should tick both boxes - https://goo.gl/maps/RRtggizdMpw
If you want cut it down to under two hours omit Haverhill and Saffron Walden.
Head from Steeple Bumpstead to Thaxted - https://goo.gl/maps/6SNpB7PDFBJ2

From Finchingfield the loop can be done in either direction.
For food I can recommend Bosworths in Finchingfield for food.
Burgers or Pizza at the Braintree end point.

Also the B1010 South Woodham Ferrers to Burnham: the infamous Burnham Bends (watch out for bikes taking a racing line!)

thumbup for the B184. My longer route omits the section from Great Dunmow to Thaxted though.

Still a good topic though!

Two of my favourite small routes near me (based in Chelmsford) are Hammonds Road (from Sandon up to Boreham) and also Margaretting Road/Maldon Road/Wantz Road/Writtle Road/Margaretting road (from Galleywood to Writtle).

The roads around Hanningfield Reservoir can be good fun too but I probably don't get up early enough to enjoy them at their best, and usually end up getting stuck behind someone driving slower than I'd like to be going.

I do need to explore slightly further afield though and find some more roads to add to my list!

Those roads are...errr... ok, there are much better roads in Essex though.

In geographical order...

Abridge <-> Chipping Ongar
Chipping Ongar <-> Great Dunmow
Great Dunmow <-> Finchingfield
Finchingfield <-> Braintree
Braintree <-> Sudbury

Pretty much anything in the countryside between the M11 and A131 is good

I did say "small" i.e. not amazing, and that they are near me, which none of yours are. I don't think there is much better in the Chelmsford area, hence the need to go further afield.
