what route shall i take from munich to lake garda??

Hi everyone, me and my girlfriend are drivng to lake garda on the 15th aug from sunny liverpool and i'm wondering what passes to take after we have stayed overnight at munich to begin our journey over the alps to lake garda. i have read so much about the 'stelvio pass' but i'm aware that there are quite a few other enjoyable roads to take. Could anyone give me an idea of what scenic route to take for this stage of our journey or is the stelvio pass 'a must'??? After camping for a few days on lake garda we're going off to the french riviera then back up to calais ( with a few stops) in a kind of circular route, so any ideas of routes to take will be most welcome.
