In 2007 I drove across to Austria, via Stuttgart, and there were mile upon mile of roadworks on the A8 on the Stuttgart stretch.

Does anyone know if they're still there or are over? I haven't been able to find anything via Google and with the traffic function on Googlemaps.

There are certainly roadworks between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe - did it about a month ago. Very narrow lanes. Try the Route Planner on the TomTom site.

I lived there in 2000 / 2001 and go back fairly frequently; there are always roadworks around Stuttgart.

Suggest avoid A8 - it's always busy, slow and narrow.

Suggest A7 or A9 instead. A7 can be nearly empty sometimes
and A9 is a three lanes each way proper highway.

Via the A6

or

a bit of a detour

We're staying in Saarbrucken on the way through, thats an unchangeable so the A7/A9 routes look a bit of a way out of range as it were. We're only in smarts so nice max speed runs arent a worry.

Having just come back from Germany last week, if it is of any help there are extensive road works on the stretch of Autobahn from Stuttgart through to Munich. I would say over half the the journey is affected by them.

If you are only in Smarts, I'd strongly favour the Bundestrasse network
over the autobahn network.

Some fine 100-120 kmh roads.

If you have Sat Nav, you can program shortest route and take that
- usually leads to some interesting places and you get the chance
to eat in more "interesting" places than the A-bahn restaurants.

We did A6/A7 iirc - then A8 after Munich. Well that was the plan, we met up with someone who did flydrive and a couple of cars left a bit earlier than the other 4 (led by me). My satnav warned me about slow traffic and we dived off at the next junction and the satnav picked a lovely scenic route to Kaprun. The 2 who went ahead arrived an hour after us. I do love my Garmin biggrin

I havent travelled back with the others but they did A9 to Nurnberg and then across on the A6 without incident.
