Hello all. I am heading into the valleys this weekend for a mates wedding. Are there any good driving roads or places to see near Blackwood, Gwent (NP12 0AG)?

Thanks

Elan valley. Set Tom tom to guide you there, roads are great.

Most of the roads North of the Head of the Valleys road are fun. The B4560 is particularly good but watch out for sheep.

The Beacons are the way forward.

The B4560 is good, but plenty of crests to keep you on your toes in a low car. The A4059 and A4069 (the 'Evo hairpin' road) are very good. If you're coming from Bristol the B4235 from Chepstow is superb. Also some good roads in the Valleys.

ETA the latter part of this might be of interest: http://chriscarblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/run-to-hi...

There's the Black Mountain Pass:

Used on TopGear to do some shoots in cars

Further North there is the Evo Triangle

And some others here: http://www.drivingroads.co.uk/index.php?cPath=29

Camera Van on this last week when i used it. Luckily he drove past me when i was stopped having lunch so had warning.

Struck me that it would be better driven north south rather than south north like i did.

I think I will give that one a go as its relatively close to where we are staying and looks good for photos.
I will keep an eye out for scameras and sheep?
Thanks all.

Can't remember which way it was (I think it was north south like you say) but I found it was much better in one direction. Basically you want to be travelling uphill to the famous hairpin! That means the first bit is quite leafy lush countryside and both the road and the surroundings get more dramatic as you head out. Just be aware that there are some interesting cambers at the top and my TVR didn't like the surface at the far end one bit.

The A4059 is so close (to the 4069) you might as well give that a go too. It's a lot more open and potentially a lot quicker. There weren't any scameras around in February though!

I'm back now. I did it both ways and must say it is very nice up there.
Thanks for the recommendation. I have a load of nice pics too.
I didn't fancy going particularly quickly with all the sheep and horses/ponys wandering in the road.
