Looking at the map places like Colorado's have got to be good, but I've no idea where to start.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

IMHO Pacific Coast Highway 1 (PCH) from LA to San Fran is stunning

Loads in the Rockies (New Mexico, Colorado). Avoid the big flat states and head for hilly places.

Thanks for those guys, that's a nice start.

You don't happen to know of a site like this in the States? GearHeads?

+1

It's insane, 90+ miles of CORNERS. I kind of wish I stopped since I'd been driving so long but went SF to LA in a day.

The road leading into/out of the west side of Yosemite National Park was easily my favourite when I went out to California a couple of year back - wide, glass-smooth, sweeping bends which were even fun in our lousy hire car. The coast highway was fun too, but you definitely want to hire something halfway decent if you want to have fun along there - the brake pedal on the Dodge went very long after about 20 miles of only mildly spirited driving!

The section of Highway 1 north of SF is even better if your planning on some spirited driving IMO - the condition of the road is much better and there is far less traffic.

Scenery is not bad either.

I'm off to USA with my brothers on saturday for a couple of weeks. Probably be too late by then to tell you about our route. All i know so far is that we're driving from Nashville TN upto California, Laguna Seca area. On the way we would be driving up pikes peaks and possibly on route 66. I've been promised theres some good twisty roads on the way.

Pretty much the whole road is awesome, I drove from Southern Oregon all the way down to LA over the course of 3 days and actually made myself feel unwell on one section the bends came so thick and fast.

Mind you, I was lucky enough to have hired a 350z roadster, so it was a little bit more spirited than your average hire car drive!

The road through Zion National Park is great, through tunnels and hairpin bends.
Roads through the Santa Monica Mountains north of LA are good too.

While the western states have some good roads, I prefer the mountain roads in north Georgia and North Carolina. We do road trips there 3-4 times per year and the state maintained roads are spectacular. Avoid the popular ones like Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee (US 129) and Blue Ridge Parkway if you want to drive fast. Stay on other roads like Georgia 348 (Richard Russell Scenic highway), GA 197, GA 17/75, GA 180, GA 60 (Wolf Pen Gap route), North Carolina 215, NC 80, NC 70, NC 194, NC 281 (one section is gravel), old US 64, Buck Creek road just west of Highlands going north off of US 64 is awesome. NC 208/ 209 through Hot springs north of Asheville is great as well as NC 28 going north of US 64. Sky Lake road is a little more mellow in north Georgia near the town of Helen, but is also enjoyable. In a typical 3 day driving weekend I get between 800-1000 miles in the mountains, it is spectacular!

Was in Nevada and California in 2007 and particularly enjoyed the long straight roads through Death Valley. Also Tioga pass in yosemite national park, that tends to be the twisty mountain roads...great biggrin

Just come back from Cali, and did LA to San Fran on the PCH1 over a couple days... to be honest the views are just too good to actually hammer it, and during peak season you'll get stuck at 30mph behind RV's and tourists going slow in convertibles (like me).

Theres a lot of awesome Canyon runs you can do out of LA if you're so minded, but I'd recommend the PCH1 to anyone if you wanna relax and have a great road trip.
