My commute into work covers a few A/B roads and 15+ miles of the M6. Junction 10A to 6. Should take me 35mins on the way home its double that. Something needs to be done about this road. Lane Discipline is shocking.

Yep - drove from Cumbria to Hampshire on Friday. Took me ten hours, five of which were on the M6. Horrible, loathsome road!

See what you think when they do the hard shoulder running variable speed limit stuff.

I use the M6 from the Rayhall interchange, northwards, a lot.

It just seems to mostly be that the volume of traffic is too great for the road, the slightest problem and long jams follow.

This is what they do on the M42. The speed limit is dropped to 60mph as soon as there's the slightest bit of traffic.
Purely a moneymaking exercise?

Hopefully the M6 is not THAT bad as I have to run almost the whole length of it to get to BTAP on Saturday morning/ afternoon. We shall be taking the M6 toll as well because we plan on hitting Birmingham at about 2pm.

The problem with the M6 at those sections is that you are going through an area where 3/4 motorways come in to contact with it, so traffic can get horrible and people choose their lane based on not wanting to be forced off at 8. Lane discipline? it can't have been that busy if lane discipline was possible, that section of the M6 can end up as a 3 lane carpark which clears after junction 8 going south or starts at junction 8 going north.

It only takes an errant leaf to stray into the middle lane and you get a 20 mile line of static morons, controlled by an army of clipboard wielding, luminescent jacket wearing jobsworths.

Re lane discipline per se, the topic has been done to death and the only realistic way the culture will change is when the authorities utilise the message signs on the overhead gantries to read "keep left you grotty legions of dormant vermin!"

I have to use J10A - J8 lots - if I need to go beyond J6 I tend to use the toll.

There is no lane discipline, ever. Everyone is hell bent on getting where they are going without pause or thought for others.

Got to go now, I need to make a pickup and drive from J4 on the M5 onto the M6 and then on to the M54. Wish me luck....

The M6 is acctually THAT bad the worst bit is all the bloody road works with no one working on them but with 50mph average speed cameras protecting them for a minimum of a mile after them. mad

My wife has to commute to Oxford from Southport about once a week.

She is most frequently delayed by accidents near J19, often resulting in her taking detours to miss them. A 3hr trip regularly takes 5 hours nowadays.

As derestrictor said, most of the problems are caused by the motorway wombles who close off lanes for the most trivial of reasons. They ought to be retrained on the facts of life as a commuter. Or shot. Probably both, thinking about it. Health and safety my bottom!

I have to use the M6 when I go to Liverpool but go on the toll since 4 times ago when I got stuck for 6 hours. Got stuck on the M1 once when they open that middle bit surrounded by concrete barriers and someones car had overheated and made everyone get stuck there! M6 toll isn't bad, you can get some right speed up there !

I live right next to M6 Junction 13, in Stafford. At least once a week the M6 gets closed between 13 and 14, due to cocktard drivers crashing, so all the traffic has to crawl through our little town. Which makes a right royal feckup of the place.

Lousy lane discipline.

The person driving the car in the middle lane, closest to us,
needs taking out the back and some re-education with a
big lump of 2 by 4, don't they ?

Thats a hard call with a static photo.

I've noticed, playing with my in car cam wotsit, things can look a bit different when you're actually in the car.

And with the traffic density we can see, it doesn't really matter much.

If you didn't all crash into one another, we wouldn't have to close lanes to sort your mess out! wink
