toll free / low motoring???
Discussion
hi everyone, havent posted for a while but i am after some travel info and as you guys /girls are pretty genned up on european motoring i thought that i would start here.....
i am off to the alps over new year and will be driving. i always get straight off the tunnel and drive the following route through france tp tignes....
rhiems - troyes - east at bourg en bresse towards geneva - head down past annecy along the side of the lake - down to albertville - moutiers - bourg st maurice - tignes
the question that i have is, are there any other ways that avoid the tolls but is still a quick route? i know not all of the route is not tolls so i was wondering if it possible to do a route and just use the motorways where the tolls are low or not at all.....any help appreciated.

The French-Belgian border route on the toll free roads used to be very slow, although marked as an A-Road it is mostly urban with 50-60kph limits, not sure if they've improved it recently.
I'd only use Toll-Free routes outside of built up areas as you can be sure you can travel around 100kph speeds.
Also, you need to be good at navigating, as at least in France, the signs on the 'free' roads just point to the next town/village the signs between cities mainly guide you to the toll routes.
