I'm driving from Darlington to Callander for a long weekend in February next year. While there we'll also be visiting Inverness for a day as well.

The obvious route to take would be A66 then M74 to get to Callander but I'm interested to hear if anyone has more interesting routes that wouldn't take much more time, maybe the A68?

For the day out in Inverness I'll probably head up on the A82 and then back on A9 but again would be interested in more scenic routes - although that's going to be pretty scenic I expect!

Thanks!

Certainly A68 to Crook, then up Weardale to Alston, onto Carlisle
and then into the far back of beyond to somewhere near Stirling.

A68 all the way to Edinburgh, then M9 and A84 would be the easiest way to Callander.

When in Callander if you have the time do the 'Dukes Pass' Callander to Aberfoyle, this can be continued back to Callander on the A81.

The A84~85~82 to Inverness would be a good route, and in Feb shouldn't be too busy with tourists coaches and caravans. The A9 can be a bit boring and busy, and if your trip to Inverness is just a day trip from Callander then I would recommend taking it back home, especially after the drive up.

If you have time then you could go south via the A939 and A93 to Perth. But those roads regularly get blocked with snow in the winter (as can the A9) so would be very weather dependent. Another option would be to take the A9 south to Pitlochry then the A827 west to meet the A84/85 and back to Callander.
