London to Anglesey

I just need a bit of PH input - it looks like the options are M56/A55 or M54/A5: So, which is likely to be the quicker route (I suspect the latter), and which is likely to be the more interesting from a driving standpoint (I suspect the former)?

Quickest by far will be M1/M6/M56/A55. A5 goes through the mountains and is spectacular from both a driving and scenery point of view. If you're in something with a decent bit of acceleration, it's great, but bear in mind that at this time of year you're likely to get flooded roads.

Not sure the A55 will be that much quicker overall but it's the easier and more tedious journey all the way (unless you count unmarked-plod spotting). The A5 is around 20 miles shorter but can be frustrating as hell at busy times, but it gets better and more scenic the further north you go.

My personal favourite is to take the A44 out of Worcester as far as Rhayader and then pick up the A470 northbound, and then you can choose to go either side of Snowdon to get to Anglesea. As always, it depends where you want to be on the time vs enjoyment equation.

I've done this drive hundreds of times and tried every variation.

The quickest route is M1, M6, M54, A5/B5070, A483, A55 - this is the route I use regularly.

The shortest route is M1, M6, M54, A41, A55. The A41 is also quite an enjoyable drive.

Alternatively there is the M1, M6, M54, A5/B5070, A5, A55 - the A5 is a great drive but can be hit or miss depending on traffic.

I would never choose the M1, M6, M56, A55 - it's way longer and takes you up the busiest and most congested part of the M6 between Birmingham and Manchetser - avoid at all costs.

How about M40, M42, A448 to Kidderminster, A456, A49 to Craven Arms, A489 to Newtown, A470 to Gellilydan, then theA487 all the way to the A55 at the Menai Bridge.

Not the fastest, but at this time of the year it's also not busy. Only done it once or twice when I've gone direct from Brentford to Trac Mon to marshal.

This is correct- my apologies OP. Just checked on the map at home and the route I use is M1, M6, A54 (J18), A51, A55 . I've tried multiple variations too. This one takes me ca 3.5 hrs Luton-Llandudno, just under 4 hours Luton to Menai Bridge FWIW

Absolutely. It's a terrible place. Don't ever go there. The radiation from the nuclear power station has made the inhabitants grow into eight-foot-high zombie mutants with a taste for human flesh. Honestly - they have armed guards at the bridges to keep 'em in.

They're thinking of using it like New York and LA in those movies. "Escape from Anglesey" doesn't quite have the same ring to it but you know what I mean.



OP: The Kidderminster route is slow and you have to go through Kidderminster. Bummer. If you must get there quickly the A55 coastal route is the way to do it. If you need to get there fairly quickly but would enjoy the scenery the M54/A5 route is a good compromise.
