I have to go to Cottingham near Hull next Wednesday for 10am. Travelling from SE London I'll go Blackwall Tunnel M11 and probably A14, A1, M18, M62. Google and sat nav say go via Lincoln, Brigg etc and over the Humber bridge. I don't fancy the Lincoln route as from memory there are too many roundabouts and single carriageway roads.
Would the M1 be better than A1? Will be leaving about 5am.

I used to travel from Beckenham to Hull regularly when my son was at University. My preferred route was A102; M11: A1; A46; A15

I drive from London to York regularly and always use the A1 - a little less boring than the M1 and it seems to be less busy at the times I've travelled at (evenings admittedly, it may be different in rush hour). Can't remember how you'd cut across off the top of my head, but I suspect you're best off heading quite far off before you turn off. That said, some of the roads running up through Lincolnshire to the Humber bridge are quite good fun if you're looking for a more leisurely route.

M1 has currently got roadworks from 25- 28 limited to 50 with specs cameras.

Pretty stty set of roadworks really.

I don't think there is much to choose from between the M1 or A1 really. I wouldn't go the Lincoln way.

From what I remember of the last time I drove on the A1 through Lincolnshire, what fixed-site cameras there are tend to be located at sites following quite close to bridges.

A1 every time.

It's a simple joy now they have taken all the chicances roundabouts out of it.

Even the A14 stretch through Cambridge flows better than it did now they have the dreaded average speed jobbies. Don't underestimate how busy the M11 can be in the morning with trucks playing the who can overtake slowest game in the two lane stretch!

The M1 always feels like an accident waiting to happen to me and by the time you get round the M25 to join it you could have been past Cambridge.

Seem to remember the route via Lincoln was a bit painful but others know that end of the route better than us southern softies so I'd listen to them.

Thanks for the replies, it was a bit of a nightmare going up as the A1 was closed from just above Newark and we missed the A46 turn off as it is now a slip road to elevated roundabouts and from memory of the last time I was there it was a roundabout on the A1 itself. So we got caught up in the diversion and tried cutting across country but ended up behind a couple of artics going down lanes only fit for tractors and an hour to get about 3 miles and through Ollerton.

Coming back was easier, 3.5 hours as opposed to 5 going up, straight over the Humber bridge and M180,A15, A46 and A1.

Oooooooo, that's a bummer. Guess you can't legislate for those things.

That's really odd! We're travelling from Hull to London in three weeks for a weekend away, and came here to ask that very question (albeit in the opposite direction!). I've done Hull to London a few times on the M1 but have never taken the A1 - will have to give it a try!

I try and avoid the M1 whenever I can now, it's always busy at the best of times and once you get a breakdown or even small accident it's a nightmare.
