Sadly I am an M25 veteran spending a great deal of my life driving round it as I'm involved in the current widening. No one has mentioned it yet but the M25 is tidal, flow is not equal in both directions at any given time. The south side from Heathrow over to Kent is good in the mornings and the opposite direction is good in the evening. Therefore I'd use the M40 and M25 Anticlockwise in the morning and the same route in reverse in the evening. The north side of the M25 is bad normally and there's at least another 3 years of roadworks to go! Dartford crossing only adds to the fun and is best avoided if possible.

As long as you get on the M25 anticlockwise southside by about 7 it should be fine, any later and it does start top slow down.

The M25 gets busy very early, stays busy, and then quietens down late!
can you elaborate on very early?? are we talking 6am? or earlier
Amazingly busy at 6am. It will be moving faster at 6, than at 7, but it wont be empty.
Having done around 10,000 miles on the m25 in the past 3 years, i can say this is true.

If your on at 5am you will be fine. At 6 the traffic starts building, but you can usually get to 70.

Past 6:45 that japanese white good car will seem very attractive.
