By the way, if you do go that way, don't re-trace your steps. Do the 'loop' round the peninsular. Some great views of the Torridon hills (if the weather is kind). Many of mine were taken on that road.

Yes, that's the one.

Was up there in May and the roads get better and emptier the further north you go, not that they are either bad or busy nearer Glasgow! As mentioned above 15 miles out of the city and you'll think it's amazing. However the best is yet to come wink

The scenery is fantastic all of the way up but north of Applecross to Ullapool and beyond is really special. Last stretch to Durness is single track but it's very open so you can still make good progress.

I'm off to the Alps in Sept with 20 TVRs. I've got this nagging feeling I'm going to be comparing to Scotland; hope I'm not disappointed...!

Having seen 'said photos that's quite an endorsement, will have to check it out. Assuming we can see anything out the window in late October.

On a really random note, can anyone recommend a car hire company in either Glasgow or the Fort Bill type area. Preferably one where I could hire something vaguely interesting (nothing exotic, just a TT or Scirocco or something) for a sensible price?

Don't forget there are many, many good roads in Dumfries and Galloway, and the Borders area. B743, B740, B797, A701, A708 etc etc. Often these roads can be much quieter than many of the good roads in the Highlands. In fact pick your time correctly and its possible to hoon for miles and miles without meeting a single other car.
