I have come to the conclusion that the A and B roads of Lincolnshire have the worst surface in Britain....Unless anyone knows different!

Devon and Cornwall have always had good roads. Considering Devon has more bridges to maintain than any other county in the UK, they do very well.

I lived in Devon for 12 years before moving to Lincolnshire and must confess I did find a big difference with the condition of the roads. I have recently moved to a car with sports suspension which exaggerates the problem more. rolleyes

Ayrshire. They've got potholes the size of mineshafts. Not just from this winter either, as I've noticed it every time we leave either Strathclyde or come off the M74 for the last 10 years. Shame, as they've got some cracking roads, it's just that the pothole at the apex kind of ruins the experience.

Nope not a chance... I ride up that way quite a bit and the road are pretty good in most cases. Around Horncastle/wraggby/market rasen anyway.

The peak district truely is shocking, holes everywhere, gravel all over the places, surfaces worn down to a super smooth shiny surface which is deadly in the wet... a truely horrific place to ride.

Wales/North Wales has the best road network in the UK... the surfaces are fantastic.

The roads in the Lincolnshire Wolds are pretty good. I live in the south of the county, (the fens). Almost all of our roads have some sort of land drainage system (dyke's) running along side, which does cause the road surface to move. The problem is, no one wants to repair them.

I went to Powis in mid Wales two weeks ago and I have to say the roads there were not much better than here in Lincolnshire.

You are kidding arnt you?!

Devons roads are shocking, you dont even need to look at the sings to now that your back in the county! Millions of pot holes which just constantly get repaired that spread as they get botched so badly!

Sussex is terrible, with Surrey close on it's heels. Go towards Chichester where County Hall is though...and the roads become billiard table smooth.

Basically I think what we can conclude from this is that the majority of England's roads are total ste!

Lincolnshire roads are like snooker tables compared to South Yorkshires. No wonder people buy 4x4's. As soon as you reach the South Yorkshire borders you can tell the difference. I have had 3 broken springs and had to replace one wheel in the last two years.

weatherhill Road in and around Horley/Smallfield is by far the worse road I have ever driven.
shocking state, I have driven flatter mountain passes in a Land rover with no tarmac.

I've reached this conclusion. Over the past 6 months i've regularly driven from South Wales to Bournemouth, sometimes spending the weekends in the Bath area. My parents live in the Midlands, and i'm regularly back there. Everywhere I go seems to be uniformly terrible. Recessed manhole covers, potholes, ste half-arsed patching of potholes and cracks, which results in bumps rather than dips, vicious speed bumps, raised zebra crossings.

And all the while I see money spunked away on fiddling with speed limits for no good reason, extra roadsigns to tell me that other roadsigns are coming, signs telling me "Slow Down, It's 50 For A Reason" (which is?), roadworks that don't appear to achieve anything, extra traffic lights where before people had to use their eyes to enter the flow of traffic(heaven forfend!), LED signs to tell me that a slight bend is coming, or that I should slow down because it's a 30 zone (when i'm doing 28).

It's a fking embarrassment.

Too bloody right. Have you been up the road from the Volvo Dealer towards Copthorne? That is TERRIBLE!

No no, you're all wrong. You've clearly never been to Renfrewshire!! We have the worst roads.

They seem to have a rule that potholes only get fixed once it's deep enough to gain some pond life.

There is one crater in particular that reopens about a week after they 'fixed' it, in between Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir.

So far they have attempted it 4 times since January.

Also, back roads have a new form of speed bump - the road is allowed to deteriorate to the point that you cannot drive faster than 40mph without doing serious damage to your car and/or being forced to swerve into oncoming traffic.

Genius idea Renfrewshire Council!

Any Conservative controlled councils roads are the poorest maintained......
Locally they did, when Labour were in, plane the roads that needed repair and resurface properly, since the ConDems have been in they have been making a rough job of patching up and covering the mess with chippings.....grrr..... they had not used chippings for 12 years before that other than minor housing estate roads...not major routes....

Who me ?
