i'm going down early next week. looks like a straight forward journey. any advice on any interesting/challenging pieces of tarmac or places that i could fit in en-route?

How long have you got? Swing a right off the Autovia del Sur around Ciudad Real and there are any number of twisties between there and Cordoba so just look at a map and follow the squiggly bits. Won't take that much time up either if you're in a hurry.

Random thoughts...

If you're on the Autovia/pista then keep below 160kph to be on the safe side. If you do see signs for speed cameras, then slow down as there really will be a static location usually identified as a grey box on the hard shoulder - they don't mess about with false ones as in the UK as far as I'm aware.

Just accept that Juan/Pedro etc in their ratty soot chucker will spend the next 100kms trying to keep up with you and once they've finally passed you (occasionally suicidally) then apparently honour is restored so don't be surprised if they they pull over in front of you and revert to a slower pace.

If you've got 48 hours from Santander to Gib, then I'd probably hang a right out of Santander and look at some of the roads round the Picos de Europa, follow some squiggles down through Salamanca and on to the Cordoba area. If you have time there are heaps of roads in Andalucia between Alhama de Grandada - Casabermeja - Grazalema - Jerez to play on with some good pit stops on route. In fact if you simply plugged those in to your satnav with any deviation that takes your fancy en route.
