Finally got the chassis for my dreamcar......

A monocoque replica GT40 Mk I chassis made to the original drawings and materials (although the steel is zinc coated, not galvanized). Space is non existant as the whole car is shoe-horned inside my workshop playing bunk beds with a cobra kit car. The gt is on the top bunk.

Motive power is a 1972 mexican 302 small block ford. Probably put a 289 crank inside.

I still need to put the bulkhead, roof and front suspension mounts on the chassis but will get there (in a few years).

Rear hoop got a clean and etch prime....

A view down the side sills, the complete chassis will be cleaned and zinc primed.

This is the rear clip, an 'original racing spare from P1041' I couldnt resist checking the colour history...

Found some damage and lightly sanded down....

Looks like, from bottom to top.....

Glass - Blue - Gulf Blue? (yea right) - Yellow (Beurly?) - white primer - yellow gelcoat - red wash

I wonder if there is a central strip under there will investigate after F1 quali.

And my "its staying in the house and is NOT going in the shed" induction system.

I have a 2/3 completed workshop and minium build space but am loving every second as I can finally push on with this build.

(I hope its ok here please move to 'kit car' forum if you feel the need)

What's an itch prime? Is it to stop you scratching it?

Another one for the watch list. How I wish I had the skill-set, money and space to be able to do a project car.

Isn't zinc coating the same thing as galvanising?

Looks like a great build, looking forward to watching it take shape.

zinc coating is a coverall word

it could mean 'painted with zinc primer'

it could mean in this case the metal has been ' spray zinc' a metal spray onto sheet metal - this gives a couple of microns thick of zinc - this burns off in welding leaving
the most vunerable parts unprotected - you can see the oxidation on the welds.

galvanising envolves dipping the whole chassis in molten metal. After welding - giving
the most protection to the chassis.

galvanising is a sacreficial anode and once the zinc has gone so does the protection.

In the 60's no racing chassis was ever galvanised due to weight gains to the chassis.

Top build mate - keep us all updated............

That chassis is rotting in his garage - it could do with a nice gavanising dip -

it shouldnt cost much - £ 200 or so - there is a place in Rayleigh essex who do this.
