What do you prefer about the Clio over the Exige?
Exige is VERY capable and alot of fun. Its a very good car no doubt. Goes around all day and doesnt grumble at all. If I was only allowed one trackcar. It would be the Exige. Its not as fun as Clio, and not as insanely fast and scary as my Cosworth westy, but its much more practical and usable. Especially now that I have a bigger intercooler fitted. I am also changing the Suspension for some Ohlins and having a softop fitted! (I know the Exige hardcore will hate me!) once its topless and on the ohlins... it could be moving up my list of love!

Clio has more character and has that 'underdog' feel! Its like a a faithful little terrier!

I am 35 as well... so grew up with FWD hot hat hatches and have a certain affinity with them!

The Lotus stands up to a track beating ALOT better though. The Clio takes ALOT of looking after. The Exige is far far cheaper to run and maintain as a trackcar believe it or not! Its labour not parts mostly.

I am off to the Nurburging for first time this year in the morning. Taking both the Exige and the Clio smile V excited!

Good question!

Not alot in it actually as a guess. Not ever timed either.

Would come down to tyres. My Exige is on R888's and the Ferrari just on std road rubber.

On the same rubber, the Ferrari would be quicker I think.

Tell you what does happen with the Fez that I was never expecting. Brake fade... on massive Carbon Ceramic discs. It MUST be boiling the fluid... VERY VERY annoying. Fluid was one week old as well. Annoying. The Exige has the optional AP 4 pots and are simply the best I have ever used.
Interesting to hear, Blues on here who's not too long had his F430 had similar brake issues, I think they mainly sorted it by bleeding them again but I guess replacing for higher spec fluid might be the way forward.

So I'm guessing currently the Ferrari wins on noise and the Exige wins on chucking into corners?
Yes, I think some Castrol SRF or similar would sort the brakes out as well. I asked the Ferrari service department about this and they said Ferrari only reccomend one type of fluid and its fine for track use. The car is still under warrenty and I didnt wanna cause and issues, so just got them to change it with the 'correct' fluid hoping it would fix the issue.

It hasn't frown

Weirdly pleased to hear someone else has the same issue. Do you know if 430 Scuds use different fluid?

And you kinda summed it up PERFECTLY about noise and corners! The donkey also wins on the gearbox. The F1 box is great on track.

and a sense of pride... I know its an 'Essex tt spec' F430 (red with crema and a droptop!) but I still get a MASSIVE thrill out of using the car hard on track instead of polishing it or driving it around chelsea like alot of owners do! This is EASILY my fav pic of my Donkey. My fav car... at my fav place!

Does it get any better than driving a nice car round the Nordschleiffe.

Thats my uncle. He does indeed just drive em!

He helps me transport em around as well and drives the truck and trailer for me!

This country and cars without roofs and screens just DON'T mix... so I treated the Westfield to a proper trailer this year. Keeps it mint! Well pleased with it. Also... trying to put so much power in a little car hasnt been without its teething problems if I am honest! so a proper trailer is good investment!

Can you tell us a bit more about the Westy? You mentioned 1000bhp between 2 cars earlier so sounds interesting...

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living?

Its a Cosworth Turbo powered bath tub smile Martin Hadland from Reyland built the Engine. Its runs longer Rods and trick pistons so the internal geometry is changed slightly which makes it a rev monster and so hold the power over a wider rev range and hopefully making it easier to drive! Will Rev past 8700rpm easily. Runs a GT3071 Turbo. Big plated Gripper LSD, 6 speed Sequential ELITE gearbox
This power makes ALOT of heat... Chargecooling and watercooling all my big gay Wayne and fat Alex at Proalloy wink

My friends similar westfield ran properly recorded 10.8 sec 1/4 mile with LESS power than I have now. Ran Datron timed 6 sec to 100mph as well.

He now has bigger Turbo.... hoping for low 10's

It makes some proper power!!!!

pics of it on Dyno

Both cars weigh around 690kg which is alot for a Westy... but they still have ridiculous power to weight ratios and are NUTS to drive! They also pottle around REALLY nicely off boost and are fun on road!

I do ALOT of trackdays and LOVE tacking people out of letting them drive my cars. So if you see me about, just ask for a ride! smile

No daughters.... YET wink

Thats whats excellent about the clio.. if it does get out of shape, you can just let off and it normally sorts itself out again..
....or thats when it gets even more out of shape hehe They are great fun though.

Porkie - yours looks well sorted, love the wheels. Can well believe you get great pleasure from it, even in comparison to more exotic machinary at your disposal. You can really take the Clio by the scruff of the neck in comparison to a Exige/Elise. I fancy another biggrin

Couple of things...

First - lovely cars, and in *some* of the video some good driving, but no way was the overtake of the M6 safe, and should've got you kicked off. I'd also say don't go balls out from the pit lane, build up speed and you'll get more out of it.

Having said that, to counter the obvious response, I know I'm not god, so please take the above in good humour, but I am an ards instructor and teach on track days etc - it's so much better to see the progression when someone starts slow and builds up. I've no idea whether there had been laps immediately before you went out in the Lotus, but if not you have no idea of the track conditions (oil, rubber etc) - better to save potential expense and get a feel for the track first!

Good to see the use of the kerbs though! I hope you take these comments in the manner intended, but the M6 thing, tsk!

Thanks for comments. The M6 overtake was done in full view of all the marshalls in the end of that pit box and no one seemed to have a problem with it at all. You can't see it my mirrors but he was no where near me when I pulled back on the track.I could have pulled back over alot earlier if I needed to. Maybe it looks worse than it was? Certainly didnt feel 'wrong' at the time, BUT you are the expert and so your comments and criticisms are taken on board, and if you think it was even slightly wrong, Then it WAS unacceptable. Its a trackday. Not a race. So point noted.

As for going hard out of the pits? Immediately before that we had just done some laps following the instructors around. I felt this gave me a rough idea of how circuit was feeling on that night, and also without sounding like a dick. I was going quite a bit slower than I can do as I was trying to keep with the other Lotus, rather than zoom off and leave him. So I felt I was driving well within myself. Plus I know Bedford very well and you can't really get into too much trouble there wink Trust me... I DO build up pace up at much much slower and more progressive rate at all the other circuits! I had a big accident years ago when I was a passenger in car. Was in hospital for a loooong time and I have NO interest in returning!

Thanks for taking the time to watch and I really appreciate the constructive criticism, I still have instructors come out with me whenever possible! I love to keep learning. You guys rock! you ever instruct at Bedford?

I'd never heard of Mark Fish until this thread. Where in Harlow is he based as his site does not seem to have much information?
