I don't know much about Fords, but is rust on Mondeos of this age a problem? I regularly see a similarly aged Mondeo in an industrial estate with arches so rusty it's almost comical.
There is a bit of rust on the rear arches, but it doesn't look too bad at all. Should just be a case of sanding it back and painting it.

There is also a little bit starting to appear on the spare wheel well. but besides that there is none on it at all!

I think it can be an issue, but I am going to wax it regularly and make sure it is undersealed properly smile

RSAP was standard on the 5dr and I don't think you could delete it as there was a V6 Si 5dr. RSAP was an option on the 4dr and estate.

My dad had one back in 1998, 5dr in black, brilliant car, outgunned by a modern TD on the motorway but such a lovely drive, comfy and supportive seats too.

Back in the day I drove loads of Mondeo V6's, so underrated yet so quick cross country.

So many great memories of these cars, I remember (many years ago) one Boxing Day I drove a guy from Lincolnshire down to Bridewater in Somerset, on the way back I averaged over 90mph, with relative ease, and where I was heading home to wasn't exactly close to the motorway. Another time in my Dads I was momentarily concerned when I found the limiter in 5th and it was lower than 1-4, I thought I had blown it up!

I'd be looking at a brake upgrade, I've driven an ST24 and an ST200 and the brakes were shockingly bad.

It is something I will do at some point though smile

Yeah if you can afford a brake upgrade get one especially if you're upping the power, I test drove an ST200 and the brakes were awful, I pointed this out to the dealer who said

"they're meant to be like that, it's to stop you driving too fast"

Funniest thing I've ever heard from a car dealer.

Good car pal, had a drive at one of these the other week and was pretty disappointed after getting out of the Clio and in to it. It was pretty shagged though hehe

Thanks smile

Probably had a knackered IMRC unit, had a go in my mate's one who has just had it done and it really transforms the car! Will be getting mine done this weekend hopefully smile

I love the torque of this car, very effortless. I think it is a very, very different car from your clio wink

Would love a go in one, they look great fun!

Brilliant cars for the money smile

Had one when last year (was only 19 but insurance was reasonably cheaper than my previous car!) and was really impressed all round. MPG seemed shockingly good for a 2.5 V6 !

Although I would upgrade the brakes, way too small for the performance/weight of the car IMO.

Have fun with it smile

Rear arches are terrible on these, I used to have an ST200. Great car, but very juicy.

Don't skimp with the IMRC, just buy a new one. It stings, but it's so worth it. I also relocated mine underneath the battery tray. Only needed to extend the wiring as the cable reaches.

Also worth checking to see if the water pump has ever been changed. Original Ford ones use a plastic impeller. The shaft this impeller is mounted on rusts if the engine hasn't had enough antifreeze over the years, which causes the impeller to crack. So the pump doesn't pump, even though it's being driven. General rule is you have 20secs before you cook a head! Good news is all you need to do is buy a cheap aftermarket pump.....these have metal impellers! Job done.

There is a Mondeo wiki somewhere on the net, and some of the DIY upgrades and hands on jobs these guys have done is admirable! Worth searching out.

The 2000/X ST200 I had still had a placcy pump on it. And the Noble M10 I'm playing games with at work also had one (with an intensely rusted shaft!), and that was a crate engine in 1999 (IIRC).

Thing is, if you buy a genuine one from Ford now, it still comes in the main housing. The A/M ones only come as an impeller. So unless you take a Ford one apart, you'd never know if they still have plastic ones in.

Cheapest IMRC unit I can find is £179, will that really be better than just putting a new transistor on?

Will get the water pump done as well, is it particularly difficult to do?

Water pump isn't a particularly difficult job on the V6, as it's run off the back of the cam.

Conversely I sold my ST24 today. Bit gutted to be honest, but I need the money. Hopefully will be in an ST200 before long though, so watch this space.

As far as fitting 200 inlets etc goes, they fetch a fortune on eBay! Simple job though. Rust is something to watch out for, especially on the rear of the sills and surrounding areas. Apart from the aforementioned IMRC issues (try wrapping it in tinfoil!) they are pretty bulletproof. Mine had done 145k and was as sweet as a nut!

It certainly grew on me as a car - when I first got it, I thought it wasn't a patch on an Alfa V6, but it slowly wormed it's way into my affections.

Get the water pump done, and change the oil (a flush wont do it any harm either).

A bit of careful, preventative maintenance and thes engines will go on and on and on...

Soldering the IMRC may work, you should also consider relocating it away from the rocker cover, to somewhere cooler.

RE: the ST200 inlets, later cars already have the lower inlet manifold, but I am not sure when that change took place, may have been around 2000 from memory.

nice car. i used to own a ST200 and loved it. i would agreee with the comment about needing larger brakes though as there not great as standard.

one of the main differences between a st200 and a st24 is the engine has a different compression ratio so getting the same power output from a ST24 is quite a pain. but a vortec supercharger works well wink also the other major difference between a 24 and a 200 is the 200 has a cougar front end (v6 cougar brakes, v6 cougar front wishbones, and subframe i think)

changing the precats out on these are a sod but are needed around this age if not done already as they full apart and clog up the exhaust system frown

if possible i would look at putting a St200 front end on it as they handle so much better then the st24 front.

a good source of new st200 parts is a company called batinc in the USA, (they have an office here and can ship stuff to there uK office free of charge wink just means you have to collect. )

Likewise.

In fact, if the OP wants them, I have some brakes from a Mk3 which are a direct fit. They need a bit of cleaning / tidying, but you can either collect them (free) or pay postage.

I don't think the Mk3 calipers will fit behind the 4 spoke turbines without a spacer.

Ah, interesting point. I had an ST220 which had larger wheels...
