On Mike and Bennies 325 / 328 Alpina track day toy, when the brought it to me with full car loom (base car was a 1992 325SE saloon with electric everything, all to toys for back then the car loom (not including main battery cable or engine harness weighed a wopping 22KG, after some 2 days work she weighed 3.2KG i think from memory, this car has no heater, no electric windows or ABS so so much came out, 2 complete bin bags!!! so we saved 19KG or thereabouts.

typical M3 evo track day looms we do can go from anything between 18 - 20KG *depending on optional extras fitted) down to between 3 and 7kg, 7kg loom has switchable ABS, electric windows and all MOT items, 3kg, you get fook all, basically engine runing with all instruments, all the lights and wipers, washers and thats about your lot !

of corse the waight saving doesnt stop there, if your having a bare bare loom. we can also remove electric wiindow regs, central locking components, ECU's the heater box and if its an air con car this little lot will be around another 20KG, non aircon around 15kg, then off corse if your car is caged up we can remove the door bars and inner door skins, (another 6-8 KG on coupes)more on 4 doors
AIr con pipes, condensor, ac pump, another 15KG out so its easy to pull a good 45-50kG out if your car is just a track day or race car trailor queen.

If anyones interested we have done severall looms for track day toys, Kuhmo cars etc etc and offer a complete service, drive in, drive out (stripped cars only) for £350, need car 2-3 days to do a proper job.

If you have a fully trimmed car, ie carpets etc etc, we can still do it but the cost will be much higher if you want the car retrimming after !

Or send us your loom out of the car and we will do the work, lable it up and return it for £275, we can add extras like switchable ABS, electric fan circuits with manual switch, or if your car had aircon we can have it auto at 91degrees with still a manual overide, Oil pressure lamps, etc etc.

So Heres a list of electrics that will be present.

Full Engine with EWS, key chip security and Diagnostics,
Fuel Pump
Battery Kill switch and ignition on switch with lamp.
Push button start.
extra Oil Lamp
M3 speedo cluster with working rev counter, oil lamp, water and oil temp gauges, the usually warning lamps, but wont have fuel level or speedo as not required.
Side lamps x 4
Number plate lamps x 2 maybe
All 6 indicators with hazzards
rear fog light with extra Wet weather race lamp
Brake lights
Reverse lights
Dip, Main Beam and flash main
Wipers - 1 speed
Electric cooling fan, Automatic at 91degrees coolant temp, with manual overide switch on dash

Thats about it i think..

so really only missing Washers and Horn for an MOT !!! but as the car will be a trailor queen it will never see the road again so no MOT required although to add these latter would be very easy aanyway.

The switch pannel. this has Ignition on/off, push button start, ignition on lamp (green) oil pressure lamp (red), Switches for side lights, headlights, wet wether race light, cooling fan, hazzards and wipers.

This has its own small loom with plugs on, so simply plugs into the main harness to the sockets pictured above

Engine work -

1st a good steam clean, then the removal of the aux air pump, aircon pump and all the un-needed fittings, belts and brakets,

we have fitted a tapped oil filter housing with some nice oil pipe fittings. the sump has been removed and steam cleaned, next the new big end bearings and ARP bolts will be fitted, the oil pump will be shimmed up and the sump refitted with a new gasket.

next a lightweight flywheel and race padle clutch will go on too.

there will be lots of pics to follow over the next couple of weeks as the conversion is now in full flow, lots to do!

Yes mate, so much to do but it will come along nicely now, some chassis mods to do, lots of pipes to have made, painting to be done, the new Safety devices cage is here to go in, so will have to chop old cage out and sort that, then theres the interior to paint, all new pipes, loom, pedle box to go in, full exhaust to make, prop to sort, sounds alot but should all be straight forward, hopefuuly !

Today the engine has received;-

full set of 12 new Genuine BMW big end shels
set of ARP con rod bolts
New genuine sump gasket
New oil filter and 7 litres of Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W60

The exhaust headers have been removed, slightly modified and are awaiting painting with ceramic paint (on order)

the engine bay is having all its millions of holes welded up, over the years this engine bay has had so many things screwed in to it that now it looks like a dart board, all the bulkhead holes will be welded up to give a good firewall, any new holes will be drilled in the required places and to the required size for such things like wiring, pipe work etc, all of whitch will be grommeted to keep the firwall sealed.

The shasis engine mounts and the new gearbox cradle are finished and look very fine, although more welding is required, after cutting a section of a previous repair panel out of the chassis rail (to create room for the exhaust) we found that the 8" we chopped out of the total 20" panel was the only part welded on, the rest is attached by mastic ! Help ! what a shoddy repair, so now we will have to go over all the seam sealed (masticed) areas, remove all the crap and weld up properly, re seam seal etc, then replace the part we have cut out with a new section, this will be profiled to miss the exhaust.

once all this is done we can prep and paint the engine bay, should look a nicer place for the M3 engine to live.

The new propshaft is being made, this comprises 99% of a BMW one with a datsun rear UJ welded too it. luckily the datsun propshaft tube is of very similar diameter to the chossen BMW one. once the prop is back some brakets will be required to secure its center bearing to the tunnel.

The M3 radiator and header tank are mounted along with the oil cooler. so once the engine is in place all that will be left to sort out is some powersteering pipe work, the coolant pipes (on order from Samco) and a custom built exhaust sytem (being quoted for next week, oh and i need to get the 2 oil cooler pipes extended, not a big issue as we have a place local who do these for us.

so its all steam ahead, although the body prep work is far more time consuming than 1st thought, and the actual mechanics are less time consuming ! very strange how thats worked out!

to be continued............

Painting the headers with Ceramic heat insulative paint, hopefully this will help reduce under bonnet temps, not just that it looks very nice too, so Mike will be having a tug over this pic when he sees it as he likes sexy looking things. ! lol

the paint is Tech Line coatings, Black Satin Header Coating, available from Demon Tweeks for £30 a small pot, just enough to do a pair of headers.

Out with the extreemly shoddy and dangerous roll cage, made up of around 30 pieces of off cut tubing, the main hoop (meant to be 1 continous tube was infact 8 bits of pipe poorly welded together, more like tacked together with pigeon sh*t. who ever built this car needs to stick to lego projects really and stay away from cars !!!
