Father, son and a V8

I used to have a ford LTD of a similar age as your town car.
Basically the same vehicle except mine had the 5.8 Windsor and was an ex cop car, so had no leather or anything fancy like that.
Something very assuring about the way they drive though... like a big solid floaty cloud.
Awesome arent they! 5.8? What did that push out?Basically the same vehicle except mine had the 5.8 Windsor and was an ex cop car, so had no leather or anything fancy like that.

Really good story and nice contrast to all the "effin moron in the middle lane" and "I hate Diesels because they are not TVR's" threads.
Having driven a few Yankee land yaughts in the states I can fully appreciated the charm of your motor, I couldn't imagine driving something that size in the UK though, fair play to you!
On the Power front comparatively speaking 160BHP from 5 litres is pretty good when you consider that the "new" 4.6l Crown Vic i rented last year from Miami airport only had c.200BHP

When I have some more money next year, I want to start upgrading it - a lot of parts from the fox mustang of the same era swap over it won't be staggering but with new injectors, cams, headers and computer it should get to around 200-225 hp and 300 + lb/ft
The gearbox will need strengthening though hehe

What a wonderful, heartwarming story! I just found it today and read the whole thing! Well done on finding the car! I've often kept an eye open for the first car my Dad bought me which was an '84 Alfa 33, which I sold many years ago. Not had any luck yet!
Good luck with upgrading the car and just enjoying it!

Was that not the Cop spec one? pretty sure the Hertz rental effort was a fair bit less, felt much less though, full attack gas pedal buried in the carpet really had very little effect on forward motion.it's been in production since 1991

If i lived in the states though i would have one as a daily driver no hesitation
Everyone loves a land yacht in an age of increasingly dull frugality:

there's a lot of myth's surrounding "cop spec" car's over there.
There basically is very little difference...
beefed up suspension, poverty spec interior, steel wheels, dual exhausts, slightly modified transmission computer to allow for more rpm before upshift.
that's about it really.
The engine is identical and good for 248hp in police and civvie spec
The 2 ton curb weight does blunt performance a bit

Touching story. My grandad had a blue mk2 escort 1.6 ghia. He owned his own garage business and kept it immaculate. No holes in the parcel shelf, etc. All of the greedy grand kids (me included) wanted to inherit the car.
There's 11 male car mad grand children! When he passed the family couldn't choose between us all. It ended up in storage. Then it ended up outside on a driveway never used. Now it's a rusty wreck. Such a shame as it was a lovely example.
My uncle wanted to restore it for his daughter but she is 39 and has been taking lessons for 4 years on and off. She has no interest in cars or driving. It would be a waste especially if she did pass her test. High chance of bumps and dents!
I think the family should have sold it straight away when it was in show condition to a genuine enthusiast who could have enjoyed and pampered it.
