Refurbed gauges due back this week and all the woodwork came back last week.



Currently having all the final wiring sorted for the electric windows, central locking and cruise control.

DA - who did the woodwork above? There's a whole NOS soft dash set on ebay now but its for a 100" chassis not an LSE so no point paying top dollar and then only being able to use half of it!
So a refurb it will be.

I used a chap out near Watford who used to work for Mulliners.

I’ve a set of LSE door cards with the wood trim still in if that’s what you’re in need of?

Thanks. It's all on the car but bits are a tad tired now, not helped by me stabbing the passenger dash section taking the front seat out.

The professionals are busy studying the wiring diagrams of Japanese and U.K. Discos and late Classics to enable the addition of central locking, electric windows and cruise control from turn of the century cars into the loom of a ‘72. All well beyond my pay grade.

Having discovered that the foam passenger side panels in the rear of 90s 2 doors are shorter than those in the earlier ones I am currently crawling around European contacts trying to find an extra panel to butcher and create extensions from. And I still haven’t plucked up courage to cut into the left hand dash binnacle to start making the glove box door but I’ll have to get them done over the next couple of weeks.

The primary achievement today was bodging a modern usb charger adapter into a cigar lighter so that it looks and works as a fitted unit rather than an adaptor. Pleased with that result.

Still waiting on the ancillary electrics to be finished off but in the meantime I’ve been cutting the aperture in the passenger glove box and finished shaping the hatch for it.

Once the binnacles are trimmed with the leather then the hatch can be fettled further and then I’m going to have a go at veneering, colour matching and lacquering it myself!

One of the original plans was to install the later LSE boot fittings but I’ve always found that the parcel shelf is generally a pain in the proverbial when you do need to remove it in order to make room as you are often away from home and the back seats have either already been filled or have been folded down. The net result is that I don’t keep the parcel shelf in my old Rangies as a matter of course. At the same time the two side pods take up a lot of boot space and are an OCD punter’s nightmare as they never fit properly or remain fitted properly.

The long and the short is that I’ve decided to do away with the left hand pod that usually covers the spare wheel and will have a traditional, early style wheel cover stitched up in matching leather to the seats and dash.

On the right hand side I was going to fit the later 80s style shelf which had a cloth/carpet drop that hid the tools but the later LSE pod does look much better.

I’ve cut the protruding face off this pod and fitted a flush ply face in preparation for this also being fully trimmed in leather. The protruding section only existed to help hold up the parcel shelf and looked odd as a result.

Steering wheel back from the trimmers. It was a wood rim Momo from an early Overfinch but the wood was too damaged. The centre piece is just waiting to go off for lacquering.

The various side cards are now complete. The two for the rear seat panels will be trimmed in leather but the one for the boot panel behind where the spare wheel sits will be trimmed in carpet to match the rear of the boot.

The rear passenger cards are now finished and await trimming. The early style cards had the wrong rear edge profile to fit up to the later rear seat brackets and the later style cards had the wrong length and top profile to take the In Vogue door cappings. In the end I fabricated my own boards to the correct dimensions and then took a pair of old style cards that had seen better days and soaked and cut away the original bonded board. The remaining foam was bonded to the new boards and I used low expansion foam to pack out the original foam where required.

Thanks. It all seems to be coming together rapidly now. Enjoying doing the bits that I know I can ultimately do better than others and being able to hand over other parts to some seriously good people.

There’s also a perverse pleasure to being on the phone to a client who assumes you’re in London and routing some trades for them while you’re actually in a workshop down the end of the drive, sanding door cards. biggrin

Cheers. Collected a couple of bits of carpet trim from Northwick Park this afternoon. I’d cut a new top piece for the gun cabinet from a spare boot carpet section and that’s now been nicely piped and a section cut from an LSE rear passenger carpet has also been piped and I’ve fitted that to the panel I’d made to fit around where the spare fits in the boot.

Cubby box is a bit of an experiment. It’s taking the dimensions of the later style because this car has the later trans tunnel installed and also because we need to fit some electronics underneath it. But the external impression is going to be that of the earlier boxes with the stitch seam up the centre, chrome hinge and lock plus the ashtray in the back which I am currently thinking of using to hide USB ports.

Rear boot panel now fitted and the sloped LSE passenger floor carpet trimmed to fit the earlier floor.

The housing is from an XJS wink

It’s to get the earlier three speed look on the 4 speed box. The later selector boxes won’t fit without the trans tunnel section.
