What's the deal with the sump then? Do they hang low or just big or strange shape?

They just seem to be very low in this car for some reason, I nerfed mine on a retractable barrier in my works car park that I'd parked fine over with three previous cars..

Thanks folks. I'm very happy.

I've got a fettling list to get it a little tidier still. Dave yes it leaks a little, but the door cards will be coming off tomorrow to re-seal the window reg plates where the water comes through. Very misty inside of a morning, but the heater clears the windows very quickly. It features the standard V5 cold start issue but just add a dab of throttle and it springs to life with no problem. Its got a squwaky noise on start up too. That also seems to be a very common issue, but doesn't affect the the starting performance. As for being sharper than a Mk4 Golf, it leagues ahead. I had a 2001 1.8t GTi from new, and many TDI's over the years and this is a much nicer steer than all of them. Its a super comfy cruiser too.

Much better than the actual SOTW... but I might be rather biased smile

I quite fancy one of these to replace my old 1.6 golf, I want something similar quality, practical but with more smoothness and poke and these look epic value.

Snap!

Your car appears to be the same spec/ colour combo as mine. Regarding the leaky seals, I just ran some silicone selant around the auxillary panel under the door card and that's sorted the leaks nicely - no more misting at all. Regarding the noise you describe on start up, if it sounds like a fan and runs for about 30 seconds after a cold start, that'll be the secondary air pump which heats up the cat (for emissions purposes).

Oh, and if you think it sounds good now, try fitting a freer flowing exhaust;

Waoh, that sounds very nice! Bit like a urQuattro... may be. Looks like my rear box is very recent, and as a pawper I will have to wait until it fell off before popping one of those on. How's it sound at a cruise?

Oh and the start up noise lasts for a second or two. Have heard of the secondary fan noise but think thats ok. Had a good shuffty through the big wad of history while waiting for the Woollich Ferry at the weekend, and its had a new MAF not too long ago. 250 mile of m/way and London traffic saw it return a sensible 33mpg too.
Still happy. smile

Fair enough. My back box picked up some damage, and the exhaust comes as one piece only, so it was cheaper to get it cut off at the damage and have a custom stainless one made up. It's okay at a cruise. Bit boomy at 70, but that goes away at 75-80 ish (kp/h obviosuly). As it was a custom exhaust though, you could choose the sound level you wanted. The occasional pops and bangs are the best thing about it though biggrin

I've had 2 diesel Toledos. They are great cars, massively under-rated. They are a bdisation of the TT and golf chassis, and handle very well.

A pic at brands (it was only on track because I hadn't finished the kit car in time!)

The GF had a 2.0 SE one of these, We brought it as at the time it was so cheap, going back a couple of years now it was about half the price of anything else similar for the spec. A bit soft but I liked it, much nicer than the Bora I had later that it was based on. always look at these as a cheap runaround. Excellent choice smile

We have a Golf V5 (170) and ours has a squeaky noise on start up too - it is often the starter motor, they have some plastic inards which wear down - common problem but nothing to worry about, can be repaired but easier to just replace.

The noise is fantastic from these engines - I have just fitted a ram air induction kit and it improves the throttle pick up and really provides a quality rumble on part throttle and a throaty wail at full throttle - thats with a standard exhaust too.
