It may go against the grain, but other than the lexus lump there seems to be a distinct lack of V8's for less than £300 that have 6 bolt mains, proper rods, and are happy at roughly 500 horses with no internal mods. So function was the winner in that argument!

Bookmarked. All the best with this. Would love to have the mechanical knowledge to take on something like this.

More work on the manifolds and down pipes today, not a great deal to show for it though, as most of the day was spent TIG welding.

As seen here:

Possibly a little scrappy, but ok considering its cast 304 stainless to plate 316 stainless.

Also had some exhaust goodies arrive:

Although the Y piece is the same OD at each branch, this is reduced using these tapers:

I am sure there will be more visible work done next weekend, so fingers crossed there will be more to show.

Interesting project as I've just bought an ls400 so will keep an eye on this thread.

Slightly off topic but do I spy a vb36 bowl turning lathe? I work for the company that makes them now so nice to see one in a proper Workshop

It is indeed a VB36. David was, and still is, a wood worker in his spare time, where as I am more partial to metal work!

Maybe I am just being overly critical, they will certainly do the job, of that I have no doubt, but they could be better!

Hi James,

Initially we just want to get the thing to the stage where it is reliable. With this amount of fabrication we fully expect to have to re-engineer some of the one off stuff a couple of times.

Once that is done, we have a Holset HX40 ready and waiting, which with adequate fuel, low comp pistons and an appropriate map, should make useful power without us having to change too much stuff. In all honesty though, we havent really thought about the power hike yet, one bridge at a time so to speak!

I'd just like to add my approval for this project too! Great stuff and you make it look/sound straightforward - a reflection of your talents rather than the task being easy. thumbup

Your mention of the turbo is in the singular - are you planning on a single turbo or twin setup?

I dont know if talent is quite the correct term. I personally think of it as a willingness to try.

Every problem we have encountered has had a rather logical solution, so the only taxing part has been application, with that just being a practice thing more often than not.

Regards the turbo, the engine bay is fairly busy, so fitting twins in there would be a significant challenge. With that in mind, we will probably go for a remote single in the boot somewhere, with its own dedicated oil system.

No worries mate, any time!

Yet more time on the TIG for David and I today.

Started by making some cheapo V bands in to self centering ones, by knocking some exhaust tube through until it protrudes by a few mm:

Then needed to knock up the down pipes and bridging section of the exhaust, so after a long time welding here it is:

Getting the hang of this TIG lark:

By this time, most of the day was gone, so we decided to get it in to position using some ratchet straps, V band it all together and see how it looked:

Thats both banks in to down pipes and a Y piece, in to a 3" 316L section that terminates just by the diff. Next weekend may see it completed with a silencer, but until then we couldnt resist a little video to see how it looked/sounded.

Bear in mind that this is from my mobile phone and the mic cant cope with unsilenced V8'ness, but take my word, it sounds savage!

Anyway, more next week hopefully.

To be fair, the entire ecu, afm, and wiring loom have been replaced, so its all surplus to requirements.

Regarding the afm, they are an up grade part for the supra guys, so it was slated to end up on the bay. However I am sure we can work something out!
