rx8 VAG 20v motor
Discussion
I read the tittle & thought who's copying Craig now!!! Then realised it was you!
I think what some people forget is even if an engine is 100kgs lighter & was mounted 6 inches further forward it would change the front/rear weight balance a few percent only.

Perfect swap, I'm not so sure. What the VAG lump makes up for in torque it lacks in character, aren't you just creating a japanese 330 coupe.
I'd be interested to know how far back you can push the 1.8T because the thing with the wankel was that most of the weight was pushed behind the front wheels iirc. Even if the 1.8T lump weighs the same the distribution may change and therefore the way the car handles.
Still overall the tuning aspect of the engine is interesting and its nice to see. Please keep us updated.
We had lots of this with the V8's in RX7's etc & the weight hardly changes & the balance is the same so with the VAG lump connected connected to the Mazda gearbox it could even be lighter..... Very interested in this. I owned an RX8 and everything about that car is superb apart from the engine (had to chuckle at the dig at the VAG lump not having character!) The most exciting thing about the stock RX8 engine is the excitement about when its going to break.
Are any of these conversions well developed now in terms of reliability etc in the same way the Elise conversions are? What are the costs involved? I have a golf I'd gladly chuck in for a rex with a proper engine in it.
The Rx8 was the car it was because of its engine. Generally, Vag turbo units bore me to tears, mine is used for daily duties in which it excels, but it's almost wrong putting it in a unique car like this, every time I changed up at 5k I'd feel bad, rotary knob withstanding, but even I can see the advantages and I bet it be made to be very quick. Good on the OP.Are any of these conversions well developed now in terms of reliability etc in the same way the Elise conversions are? What are the costs involved? Surely, the high maintenance wankel gave you some excitement, alongside a few sleepless nights? I was lucky mine did 40k without breaking when I sold up, I suspect the CAT was on its last legs though and the corrosion on some of the I internals scared me.

Never driven one so can't comment but this only makes sense if some serious tuning comes with it.I think what some people forget is even if an engine is 100kgs lighter & was mounted 6 inches further forward it would change the front/rear weight balance a few percent only.
Great stuff OP, I'm keen to see how this turns out. Keep the updates coming.

??? for labour at a decent engine shop...?
Now that would be brilliant.

Interesting conversion! I like it.
Cant help thinking a Honda S2000 F20C motor (or a CTR K20A if it could be mated to the rx8 gearbox) would be more suited?
I imagine there is a noticable difference in price and availability between the K20 engines, and the common as muck Vag 1.8TCant help thinking a Honda S2000 F20C motor (or a CTR K20A if it could be mated to the rx8 gearbox) would be more suited?

i did look at the honda engine but they are lots more money for less power , this is as much about getting them back working as making awsome power ( even though big power can be had). if the vag motor bores people then alter the dynamics to how you like it either make it a rev monster or a torque monster its just cams turbos etc . it depends on what you want from the car if its a track day tool them set it up as one but this one is a every day car so it all has to work as it should , the next one is ready to start and it will be way more focused
Martin,
Do Reyland do an adapter for any other RWD gearboxes?
I know that there are a few Locost Caterfield builders who like the 20v engine, but wont use them as they cant use an MT or type 9 Ford box with them?
Just thinking of a potential market for you as Im from a VAG background and am looking to build a kit car soon

We don't do an adaptor for the VAG to type 9 at the moment but it wouldn't be an issue as we have the capability to make custom adaptors in house but if it's something there would be enough interest in then I'd certinally look at doing a run of them. We have sold quite a few adaptors for use in transverse kit car aplications so I know the kit car guys like the 20V. Do Reyland do an adapter for any other RWD gearboxes?

Craig, I dont know what your p!ssing about at, get a bl00dy LS engine in there and a couple of turbos!
Seriously, good work, should make for a cracking car once finished. Assuming the conversion is not too exspensive could also make for a great option with the RX-8s being relatively low cost at the moment.

It's getting there ( slowly) got lots of Ls stuff in at the moment !! Which is nice . Putting a Ls in it is way more money and doing it this way I think it will work real well for sensible money , and it keeps all the steering etc in stock position . Twin turbo v8 would just be silly !!
