MK3 Golf GTI Anniversary x 2
Discussion
Been a while since I have done a car thread as Ive been driving a scruffy Golf TDI around for the last year but a few things have changed in the last 2 months so here we go.
In November of last year my wife bought a MK3 Golf GTI Anniversary, it was very tidy and had a good spec including coilovers, full Miltek exhaust and decat and bits of the interior had been trimmed in tartan to go with the classic GTI theme. It also had some very wide wheels with stupid stretched tyres. Still, we could see potential in it.
As she bought it:

Well first of all, the wheels had to go.
Neither of us are a fan of stretched tyres, the wheels were nice but to be honest it drove bloody awful on them.
Luckily we got a spare set of GTI wheels with it, although they were a little tatty. So we set about refurbing them ourselves
Sanded them down, gave them a coat of primer then a coat of dark anthracite (a Peugeot colour I think).
Then I raised the coilovers an inch or so all round and fitted the GTI wheels

Did I mention the stretch??
These sold pretty easily and so freed up some funds to do other bits.
The car stayed the same until a few days before christmas when a lady reversed into it outside our house.
She admitted fault straight away and offered to pay cash for the damage but we have had bad experiences of people not wanting to pay the bill when they are presented with it, so with help from a fellow PH'er we went through an accident management company. They gave us a nice new MK6 Golf to use while they dealt with the claim.
This was the damage:
Not too bad, but the insurers felt this was enough to write off the car! They quoted a repair cost of over £900, which included some jig work and new parts.
They classified it a Cat D and paid us out a nice amount for the car, and also let us keep it to dispose of it how we see fit.
I have got a new wing for free from a friend which Im going to paint this week and will give the chassis leg a quick check, Im 99% sure it hasn't damaged it. So it will be back on the road for the price of a can of paint.
Meanwhile, we had been collecting some new parts for it. Some new wheels, BBS RC 041's and 042's (17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 rear), these are the wheels that come fitted to a BMW E36 328i Sport as standard:
That is a pic I found on Google, ours are in a much worse state and in need of a refurb but they were too cheap to pass up really.
So far they have been split and we have removed almost all of the laquer, first we tried sanding them but it was hard work so Nitromors took over:
The centres are being worked on with a Dremel, no pics of those at the moment.
We also got a US spec boot lid last week:

Oh yes, about the cheque we got from the insurers.
Well today we went out and bought this:

Another GTI Anniversary.
So now we have 2 GTI's and a few quid left over from the cheque, its worked out quite nicely.
So the plan is I can now sell my tatty Golf TDI and Im going to use the black GTI. Plans are just keep it as it is really, its just such good fun to throw about compared to my TDI. I might lower the back end a bit more next weekend.
The red one is going to get the BBS splits when they are finished, they are going to be fully polished dishes and lips with red bolts and red centres. It will also get the US tailgate and we are trying to source a US front bumper. Then coilovers to get it sitting right, none of this stupid stanced stretched tyres stuff though, its going to have proper tyres. Oh and get rid of the pressed plates this week too.

Yea both 8v's, wanted to get a 16v this weekend but my wifes insurance company said they wouldn't cover her on a 16v so got another 8v.
Ive had a MK2 Golf a couple of years ago, there is a thread on here somewhere about it, in short I hated it. Will see if I can find it.
I will go read yours now.

Thanks for the comment glad you liked!
Yeah the 16v is a very good engine - my bro had a mk3 valver and It went pretty well, the 8v isn't too bad engine in comparison though, pretty much same lump as the mk2 but bored out to 2.0l and still has bag loads of torque from low down - better suited for everyday driving and the power is lower down so you don't have to work them too much!
Good choice of car though, good to see 2 mk3s in near enough mint condition!
Will be good to see how they both come on!

keep up the good work!

Done a few bits this week. The BBS wheels are coming on nicely, dishes are looking a lot better, maybe another 2 weeks or so and they should be polished.
A friend pointed out some centre caps on Ebay so I bought them and they arrived today, really can't wait til they are built up.

Also, some coilovers arrived for the red Golf today:
Last weekend we put the other set of coilovers back on the black Golf and lowered it again:

It drives so much better now than when it was on standard suspension, just needs some better tyres now.
